CRAZY THOUGHTS TONIGHT

Here's a wild idea I had thrown at me today! Someone said the Western and Grey cup should be a best 2 out of 3 playoff! Hmmmm hockey does it!!! In a dream situation could anybody see a best 2 out of 3 Playoff? Would people come and see one game at Sask? one game at B.C.? and the team with the best regular season hosting a 3rd game if needed? kinda crazy but a best 2 out of 3 would put 2 rest the "a team having a bad day cenerio! It would generate more income for the CFL if people would be willing 2 participate. As well, define a championship as not a fluke? just curious of your input people? As well I suggest an all star game so after the grey cup you could see you fav team players one last time " the best of the best selected by the fans facing off! in an East vs. West showdown! Funny thoughts go through one's mind when you think your going to get another cup and your cleaning out your locker monday! Input please?

The CFL use to have the best of three format, moved beyond it in the modern era of the CFL though. I think that with the current format you get a big game that you have to get up for, if you can't get up for that game, what is two more games going to do for you? We also generally find that with back to back games between two competitive teams, that they generally split the two games, so a third game would end up happening more than not. Then just think of the bad blood that would spill over from game to game, I don't think that the CFL needs much more of that after this season....

I think the 1 game is best, football is much more physically demanding than hockey, baseball and these other sports that have best of series in the playoffs.

Actually, you're somewhat right but not exactly. Was it not two games with combined total points for the win? But never best of three unless we go way way back purrhaps.

I'm not sure about the best of series in the divisional finals. I love the game and I always want more but I'm not convinced that it would be beneficial.

I would like to see an All Star game. It could be played in one of the "domed" stadiums after the Grey Cup game much like the Pro Bowl game. I would love to see how these teams would play together. You have top athletes from different teams playing together and against each other. :helmet:

wonderful idea but CFL salaries are far too little and players aren't willing to risk a major injury for the peanuts they make in that game

Both — often in the same year! Check the standings section on the league's website.

In 1963 for example, Western teams played a 16 game regular season schedule, followed by a two-game total point semifinal (#2 & #3 seeds). The winner played a best-of-three final against the #1 seed. Eastern teams, on the other hand, played a 14 game schedule followed by a sudden death semifinal (same as today) and a two-game total point final (semifinal winner vs #1 seed).

That made for quite a disparity in the Grey Cup that year. We played 19 meaningful games going in, and lost to Hamilton, who had only 16 over the same time frame. Saskatchewan played five playoff games that year, and their fifth one was a 36-1 loss to us. Have to wonder if fatigue was a factor in each case.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Actually, back in the mid 80's the league brought in a playoff structure that if the 4th place team in one division had more points than the 3rd place team in the other division then 4 teams from one division made the playoffs and only 2 from the other division got in. However it differed from the current "cross over" system in that the 4 teams played off 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 in a one game playoff with the winners advancing to the division final, while in the other division the top 2 teams played a 2 game total points series to determine their division champion.

This scenario played out one in 1986 with the Esks, Bombers, Lions, and Stamps making the playoffs in the west and the Argos and TiCats making the playoffs in the east.

Football is a sudden death war of attrition. Let's keep it that way.

 I don't think that 94 Cup would have been won off the toe of Lui under a hockey style playoff. Sudden death, be there or go home.

plus a best of 3 series would add another 2 to 3 weeks to the schedule. I'd hate to be sitting outdoors in Edmonton, Regina, or Winnipeg watching game 3 of the Grey Cup series in the middle of December.

The East was two game total points. West was 2 out of 3 .
