Or the team could have cleared it with the league, and the league, being reasonable people said, give him the caravan SMS exempt, because it is the right thing to do. Like I said on Esksfans, if Ricky Ray breaks a huge career record like pasing yards or passing TD's for a career, they should be able to give him something SMS exempt.

This gift should, and I am sure is SMS exempt. Milt was, I doubt told about it prior to the season, and even if he was, who cares, I think we can all agree Milt Stegall is a Bomber, and he was going to finish his career with the Bombers regardless of 30 K here or there, so it is not like the free minivan was the reason he played another year, or did so in Winnipeg. In turn, one of the biggest reasons that Winnipeg has been selling out this season was Milt's pursuit of the record, so why not have those same fans give him the gift.

If owners think this is a way to circumvent the SMS by giving gifts for trivial, or even single season records the league will crack down on it, but for major career records, I think the league, and the teams around the league will not object. So, I doubt you will be able to buy Clermont ouside the SMS by buying him a Jeep.

I was thinking more of a Hummer anyways. :)

I agree with you, but it is a point that the SMS hasn't addressed and that is why the actual discussion has been brought up.

I would think that the van will count against the cap, as would GC rings. we are not talking about small ticket items here. GC rings usually cost about $10k a piece and are a bonus to players. But I do agree until the league explains fully what is in and what isn't in there are issues.

According to this article (keep in mind it is on SLAM!) the mini van DOES count against the cap.

You have to scroll all the way down to the bottom for the last line.
Now that I don't live in Quesnel do I need to change my handle??

Grey Cup rings better not count, that is taking it too far, I think, and I am a Rider fan who is glad we have the SMS.

If anyone should be concerned about the GC rings counting or not, it should be the Rider fans.....;)
