The Eskimo's should improve. They'll make the playoffs as a cross-over and likely play Winnipeg. 8)

Weren't we doing the same thing last season, when the Lions started 2-3 and only lost 2 more games the entire season, capping it with a Championship.

I'm not saying that Eskies are gonna do that, however, and 0-1-1 start is not the end of the world. However, Abdullah is headed down the Jeremaine Copeland road, where the operative words are 'shut up'.

Yes, my vote is definately in the lets not write off the Eskimos just yet camp. I have never like the Eskimos but I do respect them. It is nice for me personally to see them struggle the way my Lions have struggled at various times in the past. It is finally their turn to have some stumbles, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory (I'm talking about Game 1).

I certainly would not write them off either I am just trying to put across the panic of some fans and most media in Edmonton when they lose   On the other hand if they would have won this game they would have gone to the other extreme and basically written about Cup contenders!!  There is not a lot of middle ground in this city, maybe more than any other city with their sports teams? I could be off about that though??
Thank you for everything you did for OUR Lions Mr.Ackles, we will never forget you...RIP

:rotf: Agreed, cro. No it's not 'eskiebackers', but it IS a place where we can cheer for our team AND have a healthy measure of respect for other teams, when warranted. We're allowed to do that.

Well, like someone said, what goes around comes around. Hard times for Edmonton, good times for Vancouver.

Oh yeah, and I remember seeing a Welcome to Edmonton, City of Champions sign. Do they still feature that sign?
I believe the new sign says: Welcome to Edmonton, City of Chumps

Copy that. I ain't writin' them off either. Ricky Ray scares me big time. And the Eskies usually play us tough.

It is just fun to see the City of Champions struggling with some humility. It looks good on them.

Just a little random speculating... thinking out loud as it were... it's been oft wondered why Chaps would make a sideways move from the Grey Cup champs' OC to the bottom-feeder's OC... for the challenge? More money? Or maybe there are moves afoot to turf Danny Mac if things don't improve, and promote Jacques from within?

Hmmmmmmmmm.....
Over-speculating perhaps Soundy.
Oh, probably. Just killing time on a lazy Sunday :)

Still they're lucky not to be 0-2. Troy Westwood lost the opener for Winnipeg and that's why they picked up Pikula.

I have to say that Solar Max is right. :rockin:

Edmonton was named the "City of Champions" by the mayor (Laurence Decore) at the time because of all the help and relief work that was done to help the victims of Black Friday (July 31, 87)

The following is from wikipedia :

"On July 31, 1987, a devastating tornado, ranked as an F4 on the Fujita scale, hit the city and killed twenty-seven people. The storm blew CN rail cars off a bridge crossing the North Saskatchewan River and hit the areas of Beaumont, Mill Woods, Bannerman, Fraser, and the Evergreen Trailer Park. The day became known as "Black Friday". Then-mayor Laurence Decore cited the community's response to the tornado as evidence that Edmonton was a "city of champions", which later became the city's slogan."

Most people think that it's for sports, but as you can see.... It's not.

Wow, that puts that whole slogan in a new perspective. I will confess that I never knew that and had assumed that it had something to do with the Oilers and the Eskimos. That knowledge rights a wrong that I have been harbouring for far too long (assuming incorrectly). From now on, whenever I hear that wrong being promoted, I will be sure to set the record straight!
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.

That "reference" proves nothing. It's a "reference" as in re-enforcing the idea.

That sign only stands becuase of the Championships of the Oilers and Eskimo's and the mayor just added to that thought.

I'm not taking away from anything the workers did and never would but that monikor stands for it's sports reference.

I would agree with that as over the years I have always heard of it referred in a sports sense to the Esks and Oilers and not of the 1987 tornado from which thw slogan originated. In fact, when Solar Max posted that I didn't even realize that was the origin of the slogan as no one here usually talks about it representing that. But then again, I shouldn't have doubted Solar Max   . Well done Lawrence
