that is an unfair statement. I myself have followed NFL as closely as CFL for the last 25 yrs. Got into American College a bit in the 80's. Witnessed heisman trophy performances of the likes of Marcus Allen, H. Walker, Bo, etc
However, I found that there was just too many teams and too many divisions and too high a turn over of players to keep up, so now I dont pay attention to college anymore. Insinuating that anyone who doesnt follow and know college football should not "pretend" too talk about and know NFL is just not right.

I'm not sure that was my point exactly, but if you think I should be more tolerant of the phone in phoneys...okay...I guess.

just out of curiousity, what makes a caller a phoney, and how are you able to judge which ones are the phonies?

Right, that makes sense, you're only allowed to be a fan of a team if you live near them. By that criteria then, there's a few people on this very message board that shouldn't be Lions fans.

I've lived in Vancouver all my life and since I started watching football seriously in 1994 I've been a San Francisco 49ers fan.

Although the reason is not very exciting. Basically, I figured I had to have a favourite team, and I always like to go for the local team, but since it looked like the Seahawks were on their way out of Seattle that year, then they wouldn't work, I decided to (A) go with a team that I had actually heard of (I was still a n00b back then and didn't yet know all the teams) and (B) was the best team in the league, and it was about 7 weeks into the season and the Niners were about 5-2 and I figured, "Okay, they'll do."

I jumped on the bandwagon that year, they steamrolled through the whole NFL on their way to a 13-3 record and a 5th Super Bowl (that, plus the Lions winning the Grey Cup, made it a great rookie year as a football fan for me :rockin: ). I knew then that I was a fan for life and I've been with them through the many ups and downs that they've had since.

So yeah, I basically jumped on the bandwagon, but I never got off it, and that's why they're still my Niners to this day.

I have some buddies who consider themselves NFL fans but for the most part they know little about the game of football period - didn't play it and only got into NFL hype thru betting, office pools, and beer drinking with other wannabe types on Sundays, etc.; nothing wrong with that but these guys are lucky to be able to name more than 1 player on a typical NFL team - they ain't really big football fans in my books; and these are the type of guys who usually bad mouth the CFL - cause it ain't "major league" (i.e. American or Canadians playing on an international stage) - and they have no knowledge of the CFL or respect for the players up here; whatever, but frickin' sad IMO and i don't mind telling wannabes who cut down the CFL to shut their big yaps - you can challenge them on football knowledge and they're clueless.

I was a big 49er fan back in the late 60s - before they became a top winning team with SB titles - not sure why i cheered for them, but i just did; always liked to follow CFL players who went on to the NFL - liked the Oilers when Moon went there; the old AFC West always seemed to have a lot of ex-CFLers or players from there who went on to the CFL. Like the Saints now too; but no real big favorite NFL team - just like the league and the calibre of football a lot - and appreciate the American game for it's differences from the Canadian one; always liked Canadian ball and the CFL best though (and CIS ball is vastly under-rated and under-appreciated, IMO, by a lot of football fans up here - including many CFL fans - watch for Ciezki to be labelled a long range prospect at fullback (because he's Canadian - he couldn't possibly compete at tailback) who will have to take years to "develop" and have to work his way up by playing some special teams - typical stuff.)

Maybe so, but that has nothing to do with football acumen Robbie, and everything to do with the Lions doing a piss-poor job of announcing to the crowd to stay for the post-game trophy presentation.

In fact, the next wannabe American hoser that walks around with his NFL hat on backward going "How 'bout dem Cowboys?" in a faux Texas drawl ought to be rolled in back bacon, dropped in a vat of maple syrup, and have his Canadian citizenship revoked.

My other pet peeve is the guy calling a sports talk show from Langley gushing about the NFL and using pet names for American cities like "T-Bay," "Minny," and "Cinci" (Cincinnati). I'm thinking, like, "dude - why don't you just quit with the fawning and just move there!"

Too funny, David! While I do watch the NFL, I have no delusions that any of the teams are "my" teams. As a matter of fact, if I've got 13thman vbeers bet on a team, I may cheer for them one week, and their arch rivals the next week. Just football to watch to tide me over til NASCAR season starts in February. *preparing for the redneck, mullet toothless, bla bla bla comments* :lol: :lol: 8)

NFL teams are essentially a product, which allows people with no historical or geographical ties to adopt them as their favourite "brand," which I guess is the point. But when Canadians do it, it has a flavour similar to hearing someone talk about "my Nikes" or "my Manolo Blahnicks." It doesn't fit because it doesn't reflect our culture, which unlike our American friends isn't consumed by corporate branding of everything (although that's changing). We still think of ourselves as being relatively more removed from blatant commercialism. I wonder how that might change in 20 years when these newer generations, who've been exposed to more of it than we were growing up, get older.

I like that the CFL is still very much about people's ties to their geographic area and their emotional history with their team. It's sad that that isn't seen as "sexy" enough to be of value by some people. However, it just reflects the larger trend away from community and connectedness, in my opinion.

Great point Pinkfreud. It seems as though there is less "provincial" pride than 20-25 years ago where you'd see large British Columbia provincial flags waved at Lions games. Oh the affront 20 years ago for Winnipeg fans to have the gaul to yell "BC Sucks" at us! We now just seem to shrug and accept it.

Given the transient demographics of our city centers now, are we less connected to our roots than before? Should the Lions make more of a concerted effort to market their brand outside the Lower Mainland?

Yea, but who's to say my pet peeve is less important to me than yours to you, Brian? Personally I don't get my knickers in a twist over the wave. Don't particularly like it, but I don't post my disgust and disdain for it.

And we're not really talking about a guy like you who likes both the Lions and Seahawks. We're referring to the guy who shuns his hometown CFL team to adopt someone like the Oakland Raiders 'cause he thinks their logo is cool and he likes their 'bad' image.

Actually I could care less about the wave, what I do care about is watching my team in their own stadium asking the fans to be quiet when they are at the line of scrimmage. They seem to think it's an issue.

What I do care about is an uneducated team mascot getting the crowd to make noise when we're on offense.

It's our stadium, it shouldn't be used against us.

Hey all in the name of "fun" I guess. Who cares if Dave gets sacked because someone couldn't hear an audible.
