On their web site, CBC lists their views on the top 10 Grey Cup moments. Only one of them involves the Lions.

That page lists Lui Passaglia's last field goal in the 2000 Grey Cup. However, the description is definitely inaccurate as that is certainly not how the game transpired. According to their description, which you can read in the link above and I've also pasted it below, Montreal was leading 26-25 when Passaglia kicked the game winning field goal with 85 seconds left to give the Lions the win.

That was definitely NOT how the game went as the Lions never trailed in the game. BC was leading 25-20 when Passaglia made his FG to put the Lions up 28-20. After that, Calvillo hit Cahoon for a long TD pass, but they missed their two point convert attempt to make the score 28-26 for BC and that is how the game ended. So although Passaglia did score the winning points, it was not as dramatic as how CBC described it.

I sent a note to them via their web site. I wonder if it's ever going to be read and corrected.

After missing three previous field goals in the 2000 Grey Cup, Passaglia was summoned from the bench with 85 seconds left in the game and his B.C. Lions trailing Montreal 26-25. Not only that, but the Leos in fact never trailed in ANY of their post season games that year.

The fact that so many people stormed the field after the game that the Grey Cup presentation had to be moved into the locker room. Were you disappointed that there was no on-field presentation?

Guilty as charged. Something I'll admit I hadn't done before or since, but I was young and foolish and caught up in the pandemonium. I was simply delirious with excitement with what transpired. Seeing everyone else do it, I decided to join the impromptu celebration at mid-field and over the fence I went.

I later snuck into the Lions locker room long after the trophy presentation but that's a story for another day...

As for the Karl Anthony thing that also was far from smooth. Initially, they announced Lui Passaglia as the game MVP and then they changed it to MOC. Karl Anthony who was among the more steamed about the controversial Ray Alexander catch was somewhat less than gracious at first go saying that he didn't want it, that the game was setup so an American team couldn't win etc.

At the end of the game many people assumed that Lui Passaglia would be the first-ever kicker to receive the Most Valuable Player Award. However, the league decided to award the Most Valuable Player Award to Baltimore's Karl Anthony, who was the first player to be awarded with such an honour in a losing cause. Instead of receiving MVP honours, Lui Passaglia was awarded with the Most Valuable Canadian Award for the second time in his career.

I remember the trade, but those names elude me, even though I'm sure I'd recognise at least one of them; I'd have to look it up.

So in retrospect, can the 2009/97th Grey Cup game rank as one of the top 10 CFL games in history? Or at least one of the top 10 Grey Cup games?

I was at that game too and yes I was dissappointed that there was no onfield presentation but IMO the whole thing was ridiculous. They trotted out the Grey Cup, and then it dissappeared. At the end of the game, most of us didn't know that the change had been made and I still don't understand it. I have seen plenty of Grey Cups awarded on the field with fans present so I chalk it up to a cowardly, worry wart who made some silly decision based on some needless fears.

Basically it looked like the league really didn't know what they were doing at the end of the game. They seem confused and disorganized which really detracted from an otherwise good event.

I know this is an old thread and I just posted the same thread in the 1994 season thread, but I felt this posting deserves more visibility in light of this video that was just posted.

Finally.....Finally......a CBC video of the 1994 Grey Cup in its entirety.

While there are already several videos of the 1994 Grey Cup game from the kickoff to Lui Passaglia's Grey Cup winning field goal, when I say in its entirety I mean it includes:

1. The pre-game ceremony showing the introduction of the starting players.
2. The halftime show performed by Tom Cochrane.
3. And finally as I stated countless times.....the post-game ceremony which includes the two oddities.



I said this numerous times, but now here are the two post-game fiascos in video:

#1.
At 3:07:07 commentator Scott Oake said that they are waiting for the presentations on stage. But alas at 3:08:03 the video jumps to Steve Armitage hosting the Grey Cup presentation by commissioner Larry Smith to owner Bill Comrie and coach Dave Ritchie INSIDE the private BC Lions locker room instead!

With a great game, then fans were left out of a great celebration with an exciting Grey Cup presentation to the Lions!
At 3:11:37 you can see the fans waiting around the on-field stage wondering when the Grey Cup presentation is going to be.

First at 3:09:40 Steve Armitage announces that the Outstanding Canadian (when he meant Most Valuable Player) award is going to be presented to Lui Passaglia and introduces the VP of marketing for Chrysler Canada who presents Lui Passaglia the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player award instead - a brand new 1995 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Then at 3:15:04 another presentation by the Chrysler rep to Sean Millington for the Most Valuable Canadian award who won an all expense paid trip to the Caribbean.

For Chrysler to then have to take away that 1995 Dodge Ram pickup to Lui Passaglia and then to have to take away the all expense paid Caribbean trip to Sean Millington - that must be so heartbroken and devastating to these two gentlemen. Unlike those from other professional leagues, these guys don't make millions such prestigious awards are indeed valuable.
