Nice mug shot. There are so many weird elements to this story. Firstly, it is usually men who go off the deep end when it comes to relationships. To see a woman resort to this is bizarre. At the risk of sounding like an elitist snob, it is even more bizarre to see a highly successful, university educated woman doing something that you would have expected in a trailer park. To top it all off, she is obviously a scientist or physicist by training. Usually those folks are highly analytical by nature and not at all impulsive or emotional like us Arts grads... :lol:

Sad to say, this is hardly the only example of a high profile individual within the scientific realm running afowl of the law.

Some other notable examples:

In 1992 Concordia engineering prof Valery Fabrikant shot and murdered several departmental colleagues in a dispute over his application for tenure.

In 2002, a scientist at Bell Labs in New Jersey published a series of research papers with fraudulent and fictitious data (not technically illegal, but highly unethical and it ended his scientific career). The papers were at first considered groundbreaking, but several other researchers failed to duplicate his results, and he was eventually outed.

Around the same time there was an engineering professor in Saskatchewan who was hired with falsified credentials. An Asian, she claimed that the Chinese first name on what was purportedly her PhD thesis was her birth name and that, as is common practice among her ethnic group, she adopted a different, western first name after coming to North America. She in fact had never completed a PhD -- only a Master's degree -- and for at least two years she drew a salary while both teaching courses and running a research program with grant money from (among other sources) the federal government. Last I heard that case was still pending.

Two years ago, 1972 physics Nobel Laureate John Schrieffer (the S in the BCS theory of superconductors for which he earned a share of the Prize) was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter and he currently sits in a San Diego jail cell.

A few months ago, a British astronomer, who spent part of his career in Canada, was convicted for possession of child pornography.

There are unsavoury people in every walk of life.

You can add Dr. Theodore Kaczynski to that list. A respected math professor who became the Unabomber.

Lana Nguyen was given a two-year conditional sentence to be served at home. She will now be confined to her home for 23 hours a day. The judge also ordered Nguyen to repay $10,500 US to a student who wanted to be her grad student. What she did was use her ex-husband's doctoral academic credentials to land a job at the University of Regina. She claimed that Hien Nguyen was her name before it was anglicized. And she is actually Vietnamese-Canadian, not Chinese-Canadian as Nguyen is a common Vietnamese name.

Got the nationality wrong, but I think everything else was right -- I was going on memory for that one. I remember this story made the front page of the National Post when it first broke (before the outcome) but I hadn't heard nor bothered to look for any subsequent news on how it unfolded.
