Rick Campbell won't be back in Ottawa

According to the site, 3 Down Nation, Rick Campbell will not be returning to the Redblacks' sidelines next year.

This is something of a shock given the low level of talent he had to work with and all the injuries to his players. Seems kind of harsh to judge him on this season's record alone. Desjardin scapegoating to save his own job perhaps?

Off to Edmonton to reunited with Harris and Ellington.

Brace yourself for a Jason Maas landing here in BC.

Yes so much for Lionbacker polls. :wink: There were only 12 votes cast in the "Which HC gets fired first" one from a few weeks back. Rick Campbell didn't receive any votes. Of potential BC interest neither did DeVone Claybrooks.

While there could be some shock or excuse for talent provided Campbell it shouldn't be overlooked that this was a team that knocked off the Stamps and Riders to open the season then went 1-15 the rest of the way getting outscored 495-236 over that stretch. The only game they won since June 20th was a see saw affair in Montreal back on August 2nd when Adams was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter. The game would go into OT with Ottawa securing the win when Stanback fumbled at the Ottawa 26 after the REDBLACKS had opened the OT with a FG. With that they were 3-4 with the talent provided which in the East put them tied with Montreal at 6 points. They finished up 14 points in arrears of the Larks. If talent was the issue what changed from the team that started out 2-0 against teams who finished a collective 25-11 to the team that finished the season on an 11 game losing streak? Clearly there were a lot more problems in the nation's capital than talent and coaching has to be at the top of the scrutiny pile.

I think Campbell goes to Edmonton for his father coached there and he coached Harris and others before. That would be my bet.

Not sure how much goodwill that carries. Last Lions coach to game plan against Hughie was Vic Rapp over 37 years ago. Hughie would come back to be GM before being promoted to President 22 years ago. Regardless Rick is on EI until a vacancy opens up which may or may not happen in Edmonton. There's likely very few if any holdovers on the Eskimo BOD from Hughie's time there other than venerable Equipment Manager Dwayne Mandrusiak. Their President/CEO is totally new to the organization having come from Arizona Rattlers of the Arena League.

Interesting looking at Campbell's record. Overall he has a. 417 winning percentage. Ottawa stunk in years 1 (expected) and 6 (not expected) going 5-31. They had very good seasons in years 2 and 5 combining for 23-13. In the middle were back to back 8-9-1 seasons. Put them together and while there was 3 1st place finishes, 3 Grey Cup appearances and a Grey Cup win there were only 2 +.500 winning seasons in the CFL's weak sister division.

Campbell no longer coach for the red blacks was more like his own choice . Got this off Twitter

Just to be clear ...
@REDBLACKS
did not chose GM over head coach. They wanted to retain both. But Rick Campbell indicated he did not believe status quo was in the club’s best interests. GM was willing to return with coach. Coach not wanting to return with GM. CFL #Redblacks

While some point to Campbell's potential association with the Esks due to his dad it shouldn't be overlooked that Rick was a member of the Eskimo coaching staff for the first decade of his professional coaching career. It also shouldn't be overlooked that Rick has a long connection with Ed Hervey. They both arrived on the Edmonton scene in 1999 and would remain together as part of the organization for the next 10 years; Rick as a coach and Ed 8 years as a player and 2 as West Coast Scout. Maas came along a year later in 2000 before leaving for Hamilton 6 years later.

With Claybrooks gone now I guess it's Campbell or Maas heading this way?

Can't blame Campbell for wanting out after the disastrous personnel related offseason.

If it means a significant overall upgrade in the coaching staff here, I'll gladly take him.

I do not want Maas as HC. Nothing about him has impressed me since he started in the role. I don't like his temperament or his style.
