The Alouettes have fired head coach Mike Sherman on the eve of the regular season. Khari Jones takes over as head coach on an interim basis.
"We would like to thank Mike Sherman for his hard work and dedication with our team," Alouettes GM Kavis Reed said in a statement. "We would have preferred a different turn of events, but we believe that we are making this decision with the best interest of our organization and our team in mind.

"We had identified some key elements from last year where we wanted to see some changes, but unfortunately, these adjustments did not materialize. These decisions are never easy to take, but we believe that this is the right one to make. Our team is in good hands as Khari showed great things in 2018 and has a very solid experience in the CFL."

Good luck to Kharis. He'll need it.

Kinda bizarre to fire Sherman now instead of 6 or 7 months ago, but being bizarre seems to be Kavis Reed's mo.

Haven't we seen this movie before in Montreal? Sounds familiar.

Kavis attempting to make himself indispensable to the new ownership?

Bizarre to say the least. I hope LaPointe’s group gets in there fast. At this juncture being patient with any transition seems detrimental to the long term survival of the team.

Crazy move and bad one to fire a coach after the preseason. Kavis Reed needs to be fired. Should never have been hired in the first place and he is destroying the team. They could fold if CFL is not careful. Khari will last one year and be fired too. I predict Montreal to finish dead last.

Team is a mess and it is all on Kavis Reed, worst GM in the league.

Maybe the timing is due to the CFL assuming ownership of the team recently? Herb Zurkowsky's tweets are interesting:

Kavis Reed should not be anywhere around a football organization, let alone being a GM. Its actually scary to have someone like him in a position of power.

As for Khari Jones being named Head Coach, Khari Jones needed development as an offensive coordinator. He is not someone who is ready to be a HC but I'm guessing that he will jump more than Sherman did to Kavis 'ideas and thoughts' because Kavis is so wise. :bang:

Its bizarre to even think that a Kavis Reed could ever be in a position to fire a Mike Sherman. These kinds of things should never happen.

This is not the Peter Principle in action. It deserves a new name - The Kavis Principle, where complete incompetence is rewarded beyond belief.

The content of Zukowsky’s tweets has me wondering if this came about because of the league and not necessarily Reed? He simply acted as the hatchet man?

Sounds like it but WTF is the CFL doing here channeling the disastrous Kavis Reed.

IF a GM were telling me he wants to fire his HC after two pre-season games, I'd make it a double and take the GM out. You know you can always bring in former GM Eric Tillman to help settle things down. And this isn't Kavis' first need to fire people insanely.

What a complete freaking gong show there.

Good luck to Khari Jones for better luck than another BC former OC had in that role.

Jones has the disposition to be a decent HC but it's tough when you're also OC.

Sherman leaves. Khari takes over. Kavis stays as GM.

It seems Sherman initiated the discussion with Kavis.

Herb Z's tweets are interesting to say the least. If this was Ambrosie's decision for the reasons Herb is suggesting, then Sherman must have been a complete disaster of a CFL HC. The optics of firing a guy with Sherman's resume are not good, especially if the commissioner had to force the GM to drop the axe. Plus the CFL still has to pay him for 2019 so it's not even a money saving measure.

If Sherman wasn't able to command the team and coaches or had not done things that the GM wanted then why didn't the GM fire him in the off season? Sherman is not going to change at his age.

Maybe the outgoing owner wouldn't agree to that but the GM was responsible for these HC selections and he's failing badly.

That team needs stability.

This 3 Down Nation post outlines the media statement that MORE changes could be coming and lists the coaches who came with Sherman incl his son, Ben. It's a major gong show.

It sounds like it was the players who got Sherman fired as according to 3D Nation, Sherman lost the backing of the veteran player leaders on the team.
