(Vancouver) The family of former Lions president and CEO Bob Ackles who passed away Sunday morning announced through the club that a private memorial service limited to family and close friends by invitation only will take place on Saturday, July 12th.

A public tribute in memory of Bob will take place during halftime at the BC Lion’s home game on Friday, July 18th versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place.

The family has also requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the British Columbia Football Hall of Fame – a project that Bob had started prior to his passing. Donations can be forwarded to the Lions’ business operations office in Vancouver (765 Pacific Boulevard, Vancouver, V6B 4Y9).

George Chyka was just on TEAM 1040 and announced that the tribute will take place immediately following the game on July 18. He also said that ALL amateur football players in BC will wear the Bob paw on their helmets this year. According to TEAM 1040 that's over 10,000 players! :beauty:

It sounds as if they are going to do the wall of honour ceremony (including Bob) at half time, but the main tribute with speeches, videos, etc. will follow the game. At least no one will be leaving after the 50/50 is announced on this night!

Here's more details from the Vancouver Sun:
Lions announce Ackles tribute plans
CFL team, amateur football players to honour late Leos president
Lyndon Little, Vancouver Sun
Published: Wednesday, July 09, 2008

VANCOUVER - The Canadian Football League's B.C. Lions have announced their plans to honour the memory of president and CEO Bob Ackles, who died Sunday of a heart attack, with both the CFL team and amateur football players across B.C. bearing the Ackles mark.

Starting Friday for their road game vs. the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and carrying through the 2008 season, coaches and staff will wear a commemorative decal and patch.

Lions' vice-president of business operations George Chayka said the original plan was for a tribute to take place at half-time of the Lions' next home game, a Friday, July 18 contest, also against the Bombers. That has now been switched to a post-game affair. The change apparently was made in order to make it possible for the players of both teams to attend.

"If it was at half-time there's no way the players could be part of it," said head coach and GM Wally Buono. "They want to be involved as much as anybody."

The July 18 ceremony, which will last for approximately 20 minutes, will feature a video presentation shown on the stadium's big screen as well as other tributes, including Ackles' induction onto the B.C. Lions Ring of Honour. Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan has declared that July 18 will be Bob Ackles Day.

Chayka also outlined the special logo plans that will begin at the July 18 contest:

. A large centre field logo - which will be for that game only - featuring the name "Bob" inside the team's original logo, a mountain lion's paw.

. A helmet logo that will be worn by the players for the rest of the season featuring the same lion's paw with the full name Bob Ackles in capital letters inside. Also on the helmet decal will be the words "be the best you can be," which according to Chayka was one of Ackles' favourite mottos.

. A commemorative button similar to the helmet logo will be given out of all fans attending the July 18 contest.

. A commemorative lapel pin will also be struck and sold at home games. It will retail for $5 plus taxes with the proceeds going to the proposed B.C. Football Hall of Fame, a project Ackles had been working on at the time of the death.

In addition to appearing on the helmets of Lions players, all amateur football players across the province will have the decal displayed. In total, approximately 10,000 players participating in every level of amateur football including community, high school, the BCFC and both universities (Simon Fraser and UBC) will don helmets emblazoned with the Ackles mark for the 2008 season.

For sure...

The original Mountain Lion logo at centre field is outstanding. And how many Lion fans is going to want one of those "Bob" patches for their own Lions jerseys?

I sure hope they plan on selling those as well at some point?

From what it sounds like, the buttons will be game day only, but the pins will be regular merch and I'm sure you can order one if you contact the Lions. I definitely plan on getting a pin and am looking forward to receiving the button as well. Both will go on my jersey and they'll stay there the remainder of the season.

(Vancouver) The BC Lions Football Club announced today the organization’s initial plans for honouring late president and CEO Bob Ackles.

Beginning Friday, July 11th for their game versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and carrying through the 2008 season, coaches and staff will wear a commemorative decal and patch.

Set in the club’s colours of black, orange and white and circular in shape, the design includes the Lions’ original 1954 primary mark, the orange paw, set on a black background with “BOB” in the centre. The paw print also represents the lasting impact Bob has made on our community. Ackles’ motivational quote for staff upon returning to the Lions in 2002, “Be the best that you can be,” is also displayed along the bottom of the decal.

In addition to appearing on the helmets of Lions players, all amateur football players across the province of British Columbia will also have the decal displayed. In total, approximately 10,000 players participating in every level of amateur football including community, high school, the BCFC and both universities (Simon Fraser and UBC) will don helmets emblazoned with the Ackles mark for the 2008 season.

When the Lions return home on July 18th to take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers they will do so on a field displaying a similar circular logo at centerfield measuring approximately 10 yards in diameter. The “BOB” field logo will be in place for one game.

The club also announced that all fans in attendance on Friday, July 18th will receive a commemorative button featuring similar elements as the team’s helmet decal – this one highlighting Bob’s full name. In addition, a gold lapel pin of similar design will be available at the game for $5.00 plus applicable taxes with all net proceeds going to Bob’s newly-formed plan of creating a British Columbia Football Hall of Fame.

The club will have a special post game observance to honour Bob slated to begin immediately following the game. Included in the ceremony will be Bob’s induction onto the BC Lions Ring of Honour.

Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan has also declared that July 18th will be proclaimed Bob Ackles Day in conjunction with the organization’s tribute.
