Tough to get a gauge on any changes resulting from yesterday's transactions. Kongbo won't arrive until tomorrow. Tuehema is still a non-participant. Lots of reps with Menard and Betts working as bookends. Sometimes Archibald and Menard on ends. Bemiy's reps were all at tackle. Most of the time Hladik and Lokombo were at MAC and WIL on first unit. Woods was getting a few reps as 1st unit MAC. They also ran a lot of 3-4 sets. I don't know if that was for the benefit of the D or to have the O get looks at it. Bagayogo was getting his reps as 2nd unit field CB with Mike Jones opposite him at boundary CB. Overall there was a ton of rotation with D units sometimes looking like mixed bags of 1s and 2s.

Hatcher was a full participant and hauled in some nice catches on deep outs then later on re-exagravated his plantar fasciatis. Peirson was taking 1st unit reps at LG as Knevel seemed to be bothered by something. He participated in some OL drills but not in skelly or team play. Late in the session Zerr came up favoring something. Looked like either knee or lower back. After the practice and group meeting was over I watched Archibald walking very gingerly over to the sideline to get his pads and helmet. He had a big ice pack taped to his lower back.

Hambone and I paid a lot of attention to the front 7 in Monday's double practice in the wake of the unexpected weekend transactions. Up front, it's hard to tell what may happen since Jonathan Kongbo (who has been issued Jordan Herdman-Reed's old No. 53) isn't expected to arrive until Tuesday, and Sione Teuhema is still a limited participant. David Menard and Mathieu Betts took all first-team reps as defensive ends, with Woody Baron and Josh Banks inside as usual. Ben Hladik and Bo Lokombo remained as inside linebackers on the first team but the Lions showed a lot of 3-4 looks with Josh Woods as an extra inside linebacker, often blitzing up the middle. Woods and D.Q. Thomas took regular reps at MAC and WILL on the second team defence, with Brooks Parker and Isaiah Messam on the third team. The Lions also used an extra linebacker in skelly, with Hladik, Woods and Ryder Varga taking reps inside together at one point and Thomas, Varga and Lokombo at another point. All combinations, whether 4-3 or 3-4 alignments, featured two Canadian linebackers.

In addition to the weekend release of Shawn Lemon and Herdman-Reed, intern quarterback Te Jessie is also gone, leaving four QBs in uniform, all apparently healthy. Dane Evans took his turn with the second team Monday, with Dom Davis leading the third team and Judd Erickson picking up a few late reps. The tempo and intensity level ramped up as the second full week of camp got under way with a lot of spirited team play. Defences blitzed a lot, but Vernon Adams and the other quarterbacks (and offensive line and running backs) handled it efficiently with quick passes and a few timely scrambles and designed QB draws. Manny Rugamba and Quincy Mauger had knockdowns in skelly. Practice ended with the only TD of the day by Alex Hollins on a deep pass from Adams behind T.J. Lee. The defence all did pushups afterwards.

As Hambone mentioned, Keon Hatcher was a full participant in the first half of practice and made a big catch from Adams on a deep corner route before being replaced in the second half of practice by Bryson Daughtry, who also made a clutch catch on a pass that Adams seemed to throw into open space.

The first week of camp had few injuries but a number of players got dinged up Monday. David Knevel sat out the second half of practice and was replaced at left guard by Andrew Peirson. DB Josh Flowers went to the locker room with the training staff. I didn't see the nature of either player's injury. Xavior Williams, who has been limited by a thigh injury, was back on the field as third team safety but still didn't appear to be at 100 percent.

Antonio Williams, Buddy Howell and Taquan Mizzell continue to share first-team reps at running back. Williams and Mizzell also shared reps as kick returners alongside Terry Williams. Receivers Kieran Poissant, Ayden Eberhardt and Jaquarii Roberson took reps as punt returners along with Terry Williams.

Thomas, Woods and Global linebacker Maxime Rouyer were all deployed as blockers on the first team kick return unit, along with rookie defensive lineman Amir Siddiq.

Riley Pickett took all live reps as long snapper and delivered one high and one low punt snap but Stefan Flintoft handled them both. Pickett is clearly the main contender for the long-snapping role but Rouyer, Menard, Dylan St. Pierre and David Mackie all practised long snapping to each other at one point, with varying levels of accuracy. As Hambone commented, it looks like the Lions are going with long-snapper by committee.

Two things these transactions do

We are going back to American at Mac. Woods (plus brooks/Thomas as 4th DI)

On dline we are going:
Betts, banks, baron, menard - group 1
Teuhema, ? , cherry, kongbo - group 2

Teuhema as 3rd DI
Last year deballie was ?

Bemiy, archibald and picket in tough to dress. One is probably cut.

They will bring in a pro LS. 3 new good LS in league this year. 1-3 vets will get cut. Toronto cut one already. Ottawa has two, Edmonton has 2.
No teams regularly, all the time use 4 man D-line units, it's not like changing lines in hockey - not sure where you are getting that from, or are you saying that's what they will go with? The top D-linemen play the most reps, and some teams feature lots of rotation of other D-line guys in.

Hladik is going to be sit down at MLB just to play some unproven import guy just for the sake of having more Americans on the field or running with 7 only Canadians need apply thinking? Could be I guess. And I suppose McInnis is destined to be only a back-up receiver to Cottoy because of the 7 only bunk too ?

Did you not watch last year. That’s how they ran it most of the year. Unit 1 got 40 snaps and unit two got 20. I would much rather they mix and match guys to keep them fresh (and they did at times). But that’s how they did it as units. I would cringe every time unit 2 went in. They do go to 3-4 lots too on 2nd and long. A DT comes out and woods goes in.
I assume they do it this way so they don’t get ratio fines.

Last year we were only team dressing 8-9 DLine. Campbell says without a dominate pass rusher, you get pressure with fresh bodies.

HAD 2 other LS. Both were raw rookies. They cut Barber today to make room for Doll. Markgraf remains.

First radio show of the season with Moj and Giulio on AM730:

• According to Ryan Rigmaiden, depth is probably the best it has been in the 10 years he’s been with the organization.
• Young defensive linemen are ascending. The decision to release Lemon may have happened anyway in a couple of weeks (without Kongbo).
• Defensive linemen Markus Moore, a size and speed guy, Alex Tchangam (was on Seahawks PR), Alex McCalister (injured), Amir Saddiq have all looked great - mentioned in this order.
• WR Bryson Daughtry has looked fantastic.
• All 3 RBs can run – it will come down to pass pro and knowing their assignments. Rigmaiden needs more time to assess who has the inside track, didn’t want to say. Preseason will sort it out (my gut tells me it will be Antonio Williams as the starting tailback).
• According to Keon Hatcher, we have all the pieces (to win a Championship). It’s a matter of staying healthy and staying together.

The Shawn Lemon release is the most fascinating and maybe it's the up-and-comers with a bit of contract money considerations disfavouring Lemon OR the coaches don't see the upside any more.

Not second-guessing here just find this fascinating.

Lemon can't be happy but he's been this route before.

I'm not sure but some of his moves seem to be all about maximizing the money versus wanting to stay in spot and not as focused on the dollars for moving. I could be wrong.

This article including Farhan's endorsement of the Lemon signing is interesting:

as they add the West nominee for Defensive player of the year in 2022, who is just 8 sacks away from 100.

The Lions took the field Tuesday afternoon on a cool, drizzly day more typical of October in Vancouver than May in Kamloops, but that's football weather. This was the first of three straight 4 p.m. practices in advance of Saturday afternoon's first preseason game in Regina.

Keon Hatcher, who seemed to aggravate his lingering foot injury on Monday, was in uniform but did not participate. He was again replaced as slotback on the first team offence by Bryson Daughtry. The remainder of the first team was on the field, including left guard David Knevel, who sat out the second half of Monday's practice. All three running backs rotated with first team as usual. Antonio Williams got the longest look and had a couple of good inside runs but also fumbled a pitch from Vernon Adams, while Taquan Mizzell showed his good hands, making a couple of catches. Adams hit Mizzell for big gain on a wheel route down the sideline with defensive end David Menard in coverage. Fullback David Mackie also had a couple of nice catches.

Newly signed defensive end Jonathan Kongbo was expected to fly in Tuesday night. If all goes well, he should be in uniform Wednesday afternoon. Sione Teuhema was in uniform but was only a limited participant, as was national defensive end Josh Archibald, who sat out the second half of practice. Menard and Mathieu Betts again took first-team reps at opposite defensive ends, and both took reps with the undermanned second team. Menard even took some reps with the third team. There were no other changes in the first-team defence.

I tried to focus on the offensive and defensive lines for most of practice, especially in team sessions and one-on-ones.

Besides Betts and Menard at the ends, the first-team defensive line featured Woody Baron and Josh Banks inside as usual.
The second team had rookies Amir Siddiq and Alex Tchangam at the ends and second year players Nathan Cherry and Tibo Dabaillie inside. Rookie first-round draft pick Francis Bemiy also got reps at defensive end with the second team.
The third team had Teuhema and Archibald at the ends (in the unpadded session only) with Miles Fox inside. Siddiq also got reps inside on the third team and on the first team at defensive end in place of Menard.

The Lions again showed a lot of 3-4 looks on defence. Rookie Adam Wallace, an eighth round 2022 draft pick, got some reps inside with Betts and Menard in an all-Canadian three-man front, with Josh Woods again coming in as the fourth linebacker.

The first team offensive line, as usual, featured Jarell Broxton at left tackle, Knevel at left guard, free agent Michael Couture at centre, Sukh Chungh at right guard and Kent Perkins at right tackle.
The second team featured American rookie Kenny Thomas at left tackle, Andrew Peirson at left guard, rookie American J.R. Hensley at centre, Tyler Packer at right guard and versatile veteran Phil Norman at right tackle.
Thomas also got reps at left tackle with the third team, with second-year Canadian Noah Zerr at left guard, Packer at centre, rookie draft pick Troy Kowal at right guard and American rookie Sidney Wells at right tackle.

Woody Baron was dominant in a padded one-on-one session watched closely by Rick Campbell, beating Peirson and Knevel cleanly with inside swim moves, while Knevel got the better of Wallace. Cherry got to the quarterback with a spin move on Kowal inside. Siddiq showed his quickness off the edge against Thomas. Both Hensley and Packer looked solid in inside protection.

Baron had an apparent sack on first play of the day in team session. Woods also had a sack blitzing from a 3-4 defence, while Betts had a coverage sack with backside pressure on Adams in a later session.

Adams had some trouble with the wet ball but still moved the offence, throwing a couple of TDs to Jevon Cottoy in goal-line offence, and one to Dominique Rhymes on a post pattern against zone defence. Adams also hit Lucky Whitehead deep behind Garry Peters. Whitehead had to wait for the fluttering ball.

Second-team cornerback Mike Jones had a nice knockdown on a deep Adams pass intended for Cottoy on the final play of first team session. First-team cornerback Garry Peters had a pick 6 in team play, while T.J. Lee had a knockdown in skelly on a post pattern from Adams intended for Daughtry.

Dom Davis took second-team reps at quarterback and threw a deep TD to Terry Williams behind Christian Uphoff. Uphoff also had a knockdown against Davis that should have been an interception.

Dane Evans, who shared third-team reps with rookie Judd Erickson, threw a TD pass to rookie Jaquarii Roberson against fellow rookie Najee Reams. Roberson also made a catch from Erickson, who likes to push the ball downfield, obviously with nothing to lose playing behind three veteran QBs.

American rookie DB Colby Williams was perhaps the defensive standout of the day, with three huge knockdowns in team play, including one on a sideline out pass intended for Daniel Petermann and one on a post pattern intended for Ayden Eberhardt.

On special teams, Riley Pickett again took all reps as long snapper. I didn't see him take any reps on defence, despite the shortage of defensive ends, so it appears that long snapping is only chance to make the roster. I didn't watch every rep but I saw him deliver two low punt snaps, including one on the turf, and one high snap. He had one high snap which Stefan Flintoft had to pull down on a field goal attempt.

Kieran Burnham and Flintoft shared reps punting. Burnham doesn't have the range or consistency of Flintoff but he placed a number of nice 45-yard spirals outside the numbers where teams usually try to kick them. Burnham always has lots of distance on his field goal attempts but he missed a couple of longer attempts to the right while veteran Sean Whyte was accurate as usual. Mike Jones took reps with the punt returners and looked good.

Very grateful for your detailed reports, B.C.FAN (and Hambone too). One thing that has (pleasantly) surprised me is the play of QB Dom Davis. I thought of him as a short-yardage specialist - only. A kind of Antonio Pipkin 2.0. But watching "Arrow Up" from Adams' spring camp in Tacoma, I saw a beautifully thrown bomb to a receiver in stride. He appears to have carried this accuracy to camp. I still think it's Evans' job to lose as the #2 man, but I will be watching Davis closely in preseason games and looking forward to what he brings.

I am wondering, with 60% of the Oline effectively "revamped" (Broxton, Knevel, Couture) how does this unit look against the first unit D? It may take a while to gel, but has everyone looked good, on the whole?

I've also been impressed with Davis. He may be the best passer in camp. Adams has been inconsistent.

As for the O-line, today was the first time I've tried to closely watch the line play but I'm reluctant to make many evaluations without my usual end-zone vantage point at B.C. Place. The first team looks solid, though, and Andrew Peirson and Tyler Packer seem to be reliable Canadian backups. Hambone and I were speculating on what might happen to veteran Phil Norman, who has shown he can play every position on the O-line but has never won a starting position battle outright. Rookie J.R. Hensley looks like a good candidate for a practice roster spot at least.

Just when the weather improved, the Lions cancelled their scheduled Wednesday afternoon practice. Apparently the city double booked the field at Hillside Stadium. That's the third practice that's been cancelled this year. Two practices were changed to indoor walkthroughs last week due to smoke. And it leaves just one scheduled practice before Saturday's first preseason game in Regina.

UPDATE: I happened to be in the area, so I drove by. It looks like a big high school track meet. Not a good look for the city, whose contract with the Lions expires this year.

Am I counting right, they have FOUR players in camp named Williams? And none is a DL?

Is the double booking on the City? Or on TRU?

I recall, probably in 2019, the Lions were running a practice while at the same time a HS track meet was under way. If I recall the track meet was down to a couple of races at that point in the day. So it's not like this conflict hasn't come up in the past but maybe in earlier years when camp started later in the month or in early June there was no conflict.
