Yes, the D-line again appears to be the team's biggest weakness. After six days of practice, I've yet to see the front four generate any pressure on the quarterback. With the strength of the secondary, the quarterbacks have been holding the ball an extraordinarily long time to try to find an open receiver. The first team defence has also been ineffective at stopping the run. Despite all the talent elsewhere on this team, the D-line could again be the Lions' downfall.
I guess the good news is that the O-line is looking good! :roar:

Either way, I am not concerned about Johnson getting a lot of training camp reps. We have enough talent and depth in the secondary that we can move the chess pieces around. It's more the push up front that I am curious about for Saturday's preseason game against the Stamps.

At this point it's more a case of bad luck than anything else. It certainly wasn't bad planning on the part of Campbell and McEvoy. The cornerstone offseason acquisitions were expect to be Stove and Woody. There was every right to expect that their presence and push would create dividends right across the line making everybody else better. When half of your planned offseason DL upgrades don't materialize the effects are felt in every DL position.

Agreed. And until at least one of those players materializes, expect to see a lot of 3-4 packages with Wiliams, Lokombo and/or Awe rushing the passer.

3-4 … is rich stubler back with lions
Actually, Campbell and Phillips ran ton of 3 man fronts last year on second down.

The Lions held their last full practice Thursday afternoon before Saturday's preseason opener in Calgary.

I counted 80 players on the field. Delvin Breaux was again absent. According to Matt Baker, Breaux hasn't been feeling well. Matt didn't have any other details.

I also didn't see WRs Dominique Rhymes and Alexander Hollins or DBs Victor Gamboa and Kyle Clarot. LT Joel Figueroia and LG David Knevel were in uniform but stayed on the sideline while Jamar McGloster took first-team reps at LT and Andrew Peirson took first-team reps at LG. Both held their own against the first-team DL. Josh Pearson filled in for Rhymes, the second time he has taken first-team reps at WR this week.

Hakeem Johnson again took first-team reps at cornerback and had the play of the day when he stepped in front of a short Nathan Rourke pass intended for Bryan Burnham and returned it for a pick-6.

Mathieu Betts took his turn at defensive end with the first team while Jalon Edwards-Cooper again took first-team reps at halfback. With rookie American DB Tyneil Cooper showing well and taking regular reps on special teams, Gamboa and second-year DB KiAnte Hardin are fighting to stay on the roster. Both have been taking third-team reps in the secondary, behind a deep group of nationals that includes Johnson, Jamie Harry, Adrian Greene and O'Shane Samuels.

Michael O'Connor, who took second-team reps at QB, had the biggest completion in team play on a deep corner route to Jamarius Way.

Rourke overthrew an open Jevon Cottoy on a deep sideline route but had a nice completion to Keon Hatcher in tight coverage at the 10-yard line. Rourke later ran the ball for a TD.

For the second straight day, Rourke had a pass knocked down in the backfield by a blitzing linebacker, this time Bo Lokombo.

Rookie WR Montay Crockett also scored a red-zone TD on a pass from Kevin Thomson.

Mark Milan, who has taken reps as field-goalkicker behind Sean Whyte and punter behind Stefan Flintoft, hit another 50-yard field goal but struggled with his punting.

The players are scheduled to hold a short walkthrough Friday morning before taking an afternoon charter flight from Kamloops to Calgary.

The Lions have released a depth chart for Saturday's preseason game in Calgary. It features a lot of rookies and backups who are playing for jobs. Kevin Thomson and Michael O'Connor will share reps at QB. Nathan Rourke isn't playing. Darius Clark and Bruce Anderson will share reps at running back. C Phil Norman and DBs Jalon Edwards-Cooper and Hakeem Johnson are the only regulars in the lineup, and none of them is assured of being a starter in the regular season.

B.C. depth chart vs. Calgary

Game time is 1 p.m. Pacific. The game won't be on TV but will be on the Lions' radio network, including AM730 in Vancouver and Radio NL (610 AM) in Kamloops.

They're broadcasting the game on the traffic station?

No, it’s the traffic AND BC Lions football station. :rockin:

To be fair, folks who listen to CFL football on AM radio is kind of a niche market these days. It probably doesn’t matter much which station they are on. I’m looking forward to it!

Prince George hasn't had an AM radio station, not even CBC, for over 20 years.

The Lions have released 10 players after their preseason loss in Calgary.
American DL Calvin Bundage
National WR Dallas Dixon
American DB Victor Gamboa
American OL Jamar McGloster
American DL Romeo McKnight
National K/P Mark Milan
American DL Cameron Murray
American WR Zac Parker
National DB O’Shane Samuels
American WR ArDarius Stewart

There were no surprises. Gamboa and Samuels had been with the team for several years but were competing for backup spots in a deep, veteran secondary.

Not related to the 2022 Lions but Hamilton just added oft-injured former Leo Lemar Durant to their 6G IR to start the season.

With only three days left in training camp before the Lions pack up and leave Kamloops, the thinned-out roster held a double practice Monday morning, culminating with an intense one-hour padded session.

I counted 74 players on the field:
2 QBs (injured QB Kevin Thomson is back in Kamloops but is expected to be out long term)
3 RBs
2 FBs
14 WRs
13 OLs
13 DBs
9 LBs
15 DLs
2 K/Ps
1 LS

On offence, Peter Godber took his turn in the rotation at centre. Andrew Peirson, a converted centre who remains ahead of true guards Matt Guevrement on Tyler Packer on the depth chart, took first-team reps at left guard for David Knevel (shoulder), who was dressed but was a limited participant. Second-round draft pick Noah Zerr continued to nurse his ankle injury on the sidelines.

On defence, veteran free-agent DB Delvin Breaux was back at right corner, with Jalon Edwards-Cooper as first-team halfback. David Menard and Mathieu Betts continue to share reps at defensive end but more on that later.

Veteran kicker Sean Whyte was purrfect as usual. Jacob Scarfone took some reps as holder and Ben Hladik as long-snapper in relief of veteran Tanner Doll. Receivers Lucky Whitehead, Montay Crockett, Sean Modster and Keon Hatcher took reps as punt returners. American backups Tyneil Cooper and Josh Woods continue to get regular work on special teams.

The Lions are getting deeper into their playbook on offence, defence and special teams, and that appears to be paying off for the defence, which generated sustained pressure on the QB for the first time in camp, thanks to blitzes from a 3-4 package. Betts was the major beneficiary of the blitz packages, repeatedly coming free off the end in a 3-4, with NT Josh Banks sidelined for an extra inside linebacker, either Woods, Kevin Francis or Micah Awe. Betts pressured Nathan Rourke several times, forcing throwaways and incompletions, including a knockdown from Edwards-Cooper. He also pressured second-team QB Michael O'Connor from the blind side in a 3-4, forcing a throwaway.

CB Hakeem Johnson intercepted O'Connor when he was pressured on a blitz, and showed good hustle to knock down a deep pass from Rourke intended for Lucky Whitehead on a sideline go route in skelly.

Loucheiz Purifoy also hurried Rourke on a blitz, forcing an incompletion, and second-team CB Josh Thornton knocked down a hurried pass from O'Connor on a blitz.

Some other notable plays:
- O'Connor completed a beautiful deep corner route to lanky rookie WR Jazz Ferguson.
- Dominique Rhymes made several catches, including a nice contested ball against Garry Peters.
- FB David Mackie had a big catch and run on a backside screen.
- First-round draft pick Nathan Cherry took a few reps at defensive tackle with the first team, but Banks and Tim Bonner have otherwise held their positions throughout camp.
- Rookie WR Josh Pearson, who spent two days with the first team when Whitehead and Rhymes missed time last week, had a couple of catches in traffic from O'Connor.
- Rourke completed a deep out to Whitehead, who blazed down the sideline and dove for the pylon.
- T.J. Lee had an end-zone knockdown from the safety position on a deep pass by Rourke intended for Whitehead.
- Hatcher, who has taken every first-team rep in camp at Shaq Johnson's former WR spot, caught a red-zone TD pass from Rourke against Lee in man coverage.

Lions have signed veteran QB and recent Argo cut Antonio Pipkin to fill the void left by the injury to Kevin Thomson. I'm OK with it. As a CFL vet he should be able to pick up the BC offense much quicker than any other newcomer would. Given we are 3/4 of the way thru camp landing someone who can ramp up quickly is important even if he's only destined for the practice roster. We're only one bad hit away from him being on the 46.
