There are three new starters in there tonight. They'll be fine if and when Steward comes back. Kelvin Palmer's injury doesn't look good, though. He limped to the locker room at halftime wearing one shoe.

All the more puzzling when you consider he did the exact same celebration all last year with no infractions. Has the league altered what constitutes unsportsmanlike?

JJ10 looking awesome.

Manny, Burnie

JJ sets the tone. Slicing up the D. Very, very accurate at any distance.

Running game looks good.

Jones has not turned around the Riders.

Purifoy continues to make plays.

I've always thought Marco can play.

Hope Clarke is OK.

Apparently. Wally took the blame after the game for not communicating it to the players, but he didn't understand himself that Roh's traditional sack dance is now outlawed because it simulates a weapon. Even without a warning from Wally, I thought Roh should have learned from the first penalty and not done the same move on the next play, right in the face of the referee. That's like taunting an official to call a penalty, which he did.

I've never seen a Chris Jones team look so listless. I know they took a look at a lot of players but I don't know if they found 46 who can play. It's too bad only one team showed up tonight because the Lions played hard and deserved a bit more competition. Perhaps the best sign was the play of the first-team defence against Kevin Glenn and the Riders' talented receiving corps in the first quarter. Glenn is a master at finding the open man and getting rid of the ball quickly but he couldn't find anyone open.

Most, if not all of the defensive starters solidified their positions tonight. Steven Clarke did a great job at safety, Anthony Thompson played well at field corner, DeQuin Evans and Craig Roh combined for three sacks, and Elimimian and Purifoy played like we know they can. I noticed Tony Burnett dropping into a lot of deep zone pass coverage, as Adam Bighill did last year. Burnett is a converted DB with sub-4.5-second speed. That gives Burnett a leg up on Micah Awe at the WILL position but I expect that they will both make the roster.

On offence, it took a while to work out the rust, with a few drops, overthrows and penalties in the first quarter, but Jonathon Jennings picked up where he left off with Manny Arceneaux and Bryan Burnham. Jennings went 10 of 14 (71.4%) for 197 yards 3 TDs and 0 INTs before giving way to Travis Lulay in the second quarter. Marco Iannuzzi showed why he was moved to the inside slot position, contributing 3 catches for 58 yards and a TD.

The offensive line had three new starters for the game, and Kelvin Palmer left in the first half with a sprained ankle, but overall the first and second units blocked well. An encouraging sign is that David Foucault, who started at left guard, played the entire second half at left tackle and appeared to play well. He certainly outplayed Aaron Enns, who started the game in Hunter Steward's position and struggled in pass protection. The Lions need Steward to anchor the line.

Swayze Waters justified his signing with the Lions by going 5 for 5 on converts, while Ty Long played well enough to show he belongs in this league, punting 8 times for an average of 45.4 yard average, kicking off 8 times for an average of 61.4 yards and hitting on 2 of 3 field goal attempts, with the longest being from 49 yards.

Unless Chris Jones bolster his offensive line, Kevin Glenn and the other quarterbacks might not survive the season.

Re Jonathon Jennings ...

Isn't it funny how terrific young quarterbacks find their way into Wally's orbit?

That is kind of magic. And Wally does not take a lot of credit for it, allowing only that he gives backups significant practice reps.

It makes for a fan treat.

Dickenson

Printers

Pierce

Jackson

Lulay

Jennings

It is more than just luck.

So what makes a great QB?

It is more than the physical skills. 1. Ya gotta make plays. 2. Your teammates have to believe.

Looking at young Alex Ross's awards and achievements in college and high school, as in points 1 and 2, he might have the makings too. Very impressive achievements on the way up. They got my attention. At the pro level? Don't know yet. Oh yes, it is early. Yes. Yes. Yes. And people said it was too early to judge Jennings too.

Anyway, we have Jennings. Any doubters? Probably. And that is fine.

Lots of good stuff in our final exhibition game.

Jennings was 10/14 for 197 yds and threw three impressive touchdown passes. Lulay, in relief, was 4/6 for 29 yds. and a touchdown. Ross completed 2/6 passes for 24 yds.

Our running attack was on full display. Behind very good run blocking, Jeremiah Johnson had 9 carries for 55 yds. (6.1 yd. average), Harris carried the rock 9 times as well for 48 yds. (5.3 yd. average), Rainey had 3 carries for 37 yds. (12.3 yd average) and Davis had two runs for 14 yds (7.0 yd. average). Not too shabby.

Bryan Burnham led our receiving crew in reception yardage while Iannuzzi, Manny, Moore, McNeil, and Jeremiah Johnson all made contributions to our passing attack.

On defense, Purifoy was our defensive star of the game. Clarke made a great play at safety, breaking up a long pass with a tremendous hit and covering a lot of ground to get there. Purifoy and Lee had interceptions. Roh led us with two sacks while both Evans and Smiley had one sack each.

Ty Long had another excellent game punting the football and was 2/3 on field goals but missed a 35 yarder. Micah Awe was a force on special teams, leading us with 4 downfield tackles. Rainy had a 94 yard return called back on penalty and showed his explosiveness and speed.

A good exhibition win to go into our first season game with confidence and momentum.
