Larry Taylor Released

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Alouettes have parted ways with shifty return specialist Larry Taylor, the team announced Friday, along with six other players.

Also released were national fullback Samuel Fournier; international defensive lineman Cory Grissom; international defensive ends Jerome Raymond and Kris Redding; international running back Jordan Hall; and international linebacker Joe Thornton.

The moves are made as the Alouettes look to put themselves below the roster limit heading into training camp. Teams were allowed extended rosters this season for the first time to allow more competition at mini-camps.

Taylor, 29, joined the Als for a second stint of his career last season and accumulated 468 kick return yards and an average of 21.3 yards per return. He also factored in on punts, finishing the season with 31 attempts and 167 yards.

The diminutive but speedy Taylor first joined Montreal in 2008, exploding onto the scene as one of the CFL's most electrifying return specialists. After three years in Montreal, he spent three more seasons as a Calgary Stampeder before re-joining the Alouettes in 2014.

Montreal held its mini-camp last month at historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., and will kick off training camp at the end of May.

May 1 seems to be a new, post-minicamp cutdown day. Hamilton released 9 players today including veteran receiver Cary Koch. Ottawa released 12 players Thursday after their minicamp.
HAMILTON -- Receiver Cary Koch's brief tenure with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats has come to an end after the former Edmonton Eskimos speedster, along with eight others, were released on Friday.

Koch was secured by the Ticats as one of the most covented free agents of the 2014 pool but grinded through an injury-filled season in Hamilton. After a solid four-year career with Edmonton and Saskatchewan, Koch was only able to reel in 14 catches for 215 yards.

The club also announced the release of:

INT OL Everett Benyard
INT WR Lamont Bryant
INT DB Taylor Mack
INT DL Adewale Ojomo
INT RB Sam Ojuri
INT LB Jonathon Sharpe
INT DL Brandon Thurmond
INT DB E.J. Woods
The Ottawa RedBlacks said goodbye to 12 players on Thursday, while adding one.

CFL teams can only have 75 players under contract as of May 1, so the RedBlacks were forced to make some tough decisions a day after the conclusion of a three-day mini camp at TD Place.

Among those released: Running back Roy Finch, quarterbacks Alex Carder and Jordan Johnson and receiver Eddie Poole. Also gone: Defensive backs Hakeem Smith and Charles Clay, linebacker Evan Frierson, defensive end Youri Yenga, offensive linemen Eric Schultz and Dashawn Johnson and running backs LaVance Taylor and Shawn Johnson.

The RedBlacks announced they have signed defensive back Forrest Hightower out of San Jose State.

OTT ADD INT Forrest HIGHTOWER (DB) San Jose State

OTT DEL INT Jordan JOHNSON (QB) Montana
OTT DEL INT Lavance TAYLOR (RB) Central Missouri
OTT DEL INT Eddie POOLE (WR) Bethune-Cookman
OTT DEL INT Alex CARDER (QB) Western Michigan
OTT DEL INT Charles CLAY (DB) Hawaii
OTT DEL INT Youri YENGA (DL) Southern Methodist
OTT DEL INT Eric SCHULTZ (OL) Utah State
OTT DEL INT Roy FINCH (RB) Oklahoma
OTT DEL INT Hakeem SMITH (DB) Loiusville
OTT DEL INT Evan Frierson (LB) Illinois State
OTT DEL INT Dashawn Johnson (OL) William Paterson
OTT DEL INT Shawn Johnson (RB) Montana State
I count only 63 players on the Lions' roster so they have room to add 12 plus non-counters (current year draft picks and juniors) before camp opens.

Montreal Special Teams will look different too this season and if you didn't know guess who is their ST coordinator!

Clues:
1. He is rumoured to be responsible for an error in the 2009 GC game that gave the Als new life and the cup.

2. A former HC who is best known for sideline chaos and pre-game speeches bordering on the paranoiac focusing a mysterious external force against his team.

3. Out of football but still paid not to work by his former team he completed an MBA and got into some other business.

My everlasting memory of Larry Taylor was on October 8, 2011. When McCallum missed his 31st consecutive field goal after setting the then-CFL record, Taylor brought the missed FG back for a touchdown.

McCallum managed to redeem himself by kicking the winning field goal shortly afterwards.
