So, DeadlineDay had some stuff happen but the big deal for Luongo, just didn't happen. Apparently (according to Sportsnet TV crew) he tweeted something about his contract being a big part of the problem. I appreciate the games Luongo has put in. I also understand Gillis needs to get value. You just have to wonder when it would just be better to have this issue GO AWAY.

I also haven't forgotten how the LA Kings were doing at this time last season. Yes, the Canucks are struggling at times but they are still within WHISPERING distance of the division crown. People will be returning from the MASH unit. I'm not so sure the Canucks won't make some hay in the playoffs. I thought they'd do well last season and they didn't make it out of the first round. I just don't see them completing all four rounds successfully BUT I'D LOVE TO BE WRONG.......

His exact words were, "My contract sucks."
With about four or five teams speculated to be in talks for the Canucks goalie, a trade never materialized. And Luongo was straightforward in explaining why that was.

"My contract sucks," Luongo said in an interesting press conference. "That's what the problem is. It's a big factor in trading me and probably why I'm still here."

Soon after, ... [GM Mike Gillis] claimed Luongo's comments were said "in a highly emotional state." But when it came down to it, the 33-year-old, who turns 34 kicked in for the 2010-11 season.

"I'd scrap it if I could right now," he said. "It's a hit on your pride that teams aren't willing to give up much and obviously that doesn't mean it's a knock on me but my situation with my contract. It's a tough spot to be in for myself, for the organization and for everyone involved.

"Obviously the time isn't now and we have to wait."
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Thanks for posting sj-roc, I saw what he had to say on tonights news too. It was obviously what he HAD to say as well but you could tell he meant it. He's proud to be a Canuck etc... Nothing but class from him and Schnieder.......

Yeah, I haven't bothered seeking out such, but I'm sure there are some who would probably take those three words out of context as coming from a stereotypically self-centred athlete. It's obvious from consideration of said context that that isn't the case at all; he's just looking at it from the POV of other teams who would otherwise have been more greatly enticed to trade for him.

I dont understand why he couldnt have changed his contract awhile ago to make a trade more possible?

if he is willing and the team should be willing...

why mention it now when it is too late?

The players that the Rangers acquired paid off dividends tonight as they accounted for 8 points as New York defeated the Penguins 6-1. Ryane Crowe scored twice and added an assist in his Ranger debut.

I don't know all the details but it would probably entail some burdensome requirements on the Canucks' part. Broadly considered, they have already benefitted from his contract by taking a less-than-real-salary cap hit over its bygone front-loaded years and there must surely be some language in either or both of the current and previous CBAs to preclude the Canucks from easily circumventing the offsetting disadvantages via whatever scenario you're envisioning.

Nice assist in Derek Roy's debut as a Canuck.

It looks like despite Pavel Bure leaving the Canucks on very bad terms, fans still gave him a warm welcome on his return to Rogers Arena.

Count me in on the Pavel fanclub. 1994 was the time I really faded from hockey. It was MY SPORT. I played ice hockey(beer league), followed EVERY NHL game I could (including getting games taped via VCR... I know, whats a VCR  ) and really hoped Pavel would be the guy to lead those Canucks to victory in the playoffs.... I'd really like to see him get his jersey sent to the rafters....

Onto this years edition of the Canuckleheads. I really am not sure how they'll turn out. Everytime I think its not going to be their year, they go on a mini-run.... Nice win over the Flames but the Flames are a team they should be beating.....

Cory Schneider records his league leading 5th shutout as the Canucks beat Phoenix 2-0. Rounding into form as the playoffs is just around the corner

I'm with notahomer. Just when you think that this team is spiralling down, they do seem to go on a mini run. Personally, I still don't think they have a snowballs chance of getting even to the 3rd round but weirder things have happened. If Schneider can provide the kind of playoff goal tending that Roberto seems incapable of, then anything is possible.
Tell me how long must a fan be strong? Ans. Always.

Wonder if Luongo will get a shot to tend goal tonight? Probably not. Once the playoffs start I get it, keep your #1 going. Luongo deserves at least one more start before those playoffs start, IMO. The back2backer coming up (April 15&April 16th, IIRC) would also be a good time to get him in, I'm guessing.
