The choices that stood out for me were:
~Brent Johnson doesn't make the all-star team this season.
~Kelly Bates is a Western All-Star for the first time-great to see
~Angus Reid wasn't selected and I thought he had an all-star season
~Glover makes the all-star team for the first time at corner (and he played both sides this season with Marsh hurt)
~three of our four defensive lineman make the all-star team (Wake, Hunt, Williams)...impressive
~Barrin Miles is the West all-star free safety.....didn't think he would be selected this sesason

"When I went to Catholic high school in Philadelphia, we just had one coach for football and basketball. He took all of us who turned out and had us run through a forest. The ones who ran into the trees were on the football team". (George Raveling)
Bates is a Saskatchewan boy, and while he has been solid, I think that the fan vote has an influence on his selection as well.Blitz wrote:The choices that stood out for me were:

Jiminez not on the squad is a big surprise to me.
I'd love you to say it to my face because you'd only say it once...if you ever had the courage to say it at all!! Blitz, 05/24/2008
At least they have eliminated the SB/WO categories and made it a receiver category. As for the RB/FB, I would go with two RB's and a FB, as you can't tell me one FB that deserves an all star consideration above Smith and Reynolds in 07.Tighthead wrote:My only gripe is with the system, as it is in the NFL - there should be one RB, one FB. I realize this only drives myself and Paul Zimmerman crazy.

I was worried about the influence of fan voting but the choices pretty much were in line with what I had expected, with two major disappointments:
- Angus Reid has a had an outstanding season at centre. Lowell Ullrich mentioned that Reid had graded out the highest of all the linemen on the season as of last week, and could have been the team's nominee for lineman of the year. He gets too little recognition for the job he does.
- Brent Johnson got beaten by Fred Perry. It's been a somewhat down year for both of them. Johnson leads in sacks but Perry leads in tackles for losses and ranks with Wake and Williams among the league leaders in tackles by linemen. They're both great players but Wake's emergence means that one of last year's allstar ends gets squeezed out.
Kudos to Ryan Phillips, LaVar Glover and Kelly Bates for their well-deserved selections.
I can't recall the last time the Lions had 15 allstars, if ever. This is a special team.

15 All-Stars. wow!
Deepest team in the league by far.
All Stars by team:
BC - 15
Winnipeg - 10
Sask - 9
Toronto - 9
Montreal - 4
Hamilton - 4
Calgary - 3
Edmonton - 0 8)
Nice to see recognition for the team. The recognition I really want to see is another Grey Cup!

Fo sure.... I recall as a kid being thrilled when Al Wilson was the Lions only pick on offence.B.C.FAN wrote:I can't recall the last time the Lions had 15 allstars, if ever. This is a special team.
Congrats to Kelly Bates on his first all-star selection. Good timing too as one of only two starters heading into free agency in the off-season. Kelly is one of the leaders on this team but Wally has a tough decision if he thinks Valli is ready for full-time status or even Hamiester-Ries.

Agreed, I was very pleased to see his name up there. I'm thrilled with how many of our guys made this team. The fact that we've got so many defenders on that list is just beautiful. Well deserved, boys, congrats! Jiminez should have made the team though.MacNews wrote:I'm really happy Williams got the nod...he is still under-rated.
