Not to worry jcalhoun as BC plays Calgary's defence and Saskatchewan get Toronto's defence. All will be in order.

Ranking teams as having the "best" defense based solely on points allowed is flawed in my mind. I think a more telling stat would be the points for and against number.
Although defense wins championships you still have to score points.

Interesting.
Two points (if you'll pardon the pun):zarquon wrote:Ranking teams as having the "best" defense based solely on points allowed is flawed in my mind. I think a more telling stat would be the points for and against number.

The PA total includes points scored by opposing teams' defences and kick return units, which doesn't really reflect the performance of defence of the team in question. A defensive comparison based solely on PA would have to account for this.
Moreover, perhaps the GC winner in a given year was only say, five points off the PA lead (even factoring for the above), a difference which, over the course of 18 games, is statistically insignificant.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.
The phrase that 'Defense wins Championships' is inaccurate, and is proved by your numbers. A more accurate phrase would be that 'Defense saves Championships'........I'm not sure but I think Eddie Robinson said this.
It would be interesting to see how many teams win championships with higher takeaway/giveaway turnover ratios as I think it is proven that teams who win turnover battles win games the vast majority of the time?
Thank you for everything you did for OUR Lions Mr.Ackles, we will never forget you...RIP

Exactly what I was going to point out. (there's that word again!) If it's possible to go back and look at box scores of games to find out how many of those points were actually scored against the defence then you'd get a more accurate reading on how well a team was that season on defence.sj-roc wrote:Two points (if you'll pardon the pun):zarquon wrote:Ranking teams as having the "best" defense based solely on points allowed is flawed in my mind.
