Watching the game tonight heard a comment about how altitude affects curve balls. How does altitude affect pitching and to what degree, or is it even an issue?

The high thin air of Denver at 5280 feet must make for faster fast balls and may have an effect in the series with the next 3 in Denver. Can we expect 100 + m.p.h. pitches in Denver? What is the fastest fast ball ever?

The curve ball is created by putting a spin on the ball (in physics referred to as the Magnus effect) similar to air flow differences over the top and bottom on a plane wing. Would higher altitude lessen this ball spin effect to the point where curve balls are not as pronounced?

Is high altitude to the advantage of batters or pitchers?

Studies were done shortly after the Rockies joined MLB. IIRC, homerun balls travel 8% further in Denver than at sea level.

It's simple, the higher the altitude, the thinner the air. Because the air is thinner in Colorado than say, Los Angelas, there is less resistance against it and it will be able to travel to its desintation a lot easier.

The reason why Colorado isn't the pitcher killer that it once was is because they have introduced the Humidor. I believe they heat the the balls and it makes the ball heavier, thus harder to knock out of the park.

My "mabey" was intentional...I'm presuming that his misspelling of Francis was not....
