Some of Walsh's former players – notably Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jerry Rice – said yesterday that Walsh saw greatness in them that they didn't necessarily know was there.

The NFL has certainly lost a legendary coach.

I think he definitely deserved to win more coach of the year awards than he did. He won the AP, Sporting News, and Pro Football Weekly's versions of coach of the year awards early in his head coach career in 1981, while winning the discontinued UPI NFL NFC coach of the year in 1981 and 1984.
