They keep mentioning these during the game broadcasts but I couldn't find anything about them on CBC's website where I could view the SCC schedule a little more leisurely. Does anyone have a link?
Tonight they're airing Game 7 of the Smythe Division Final between Calgary and Edmonton. This game is famous (infamous?) for then-rookie Oiler defenceman Steve Smith's gaffe in the third period -- an attempted breakout pass from behind his own goal line deflected off the back of Grant Fuhr's foot and into the Edmonton net. That goal, a video of which can be found here, proved to be the game and series winner for Calgary.
Trivia buffs will note that the Flames player who received scoring credit on the play -- Perry Berezan -- wasn't even on the ice when the goal was scored, as he had already gone to the bench after dumping the puck into the corner where Smith retrieved it.

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

That goal by Steve Smith is ranked #1 as the bonehead plays of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Many Oiler fans believe he was the cause of the Oilers not winning 5 in a rowTheLionKing wrote:That goal by Steve Smith is ranked #1 as the bonehead plays of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Thank you for everything you did for OUR Lions Mr.Ackles, we will never forget you...RIP
Thanks obs.
Don Cherry's last game as the Bruins' coach -- infamous for the too many men penalty that allowed Mtl to tie with <2mins left and then the Habs won it in OT. What with that OT and all, they really hacked this one to bits to shoehorn it into the alloted two hours!obs wrote:Mondays, 12:30 - 02:30 (eg the end of Sunday's broadcast day)

Hey, that playoff year (1986) wasn't so bad...my Habs won the Cup! 8)lion24 wrote:Many Oiler fans believe he was the cause of the Oilers not winning 5 in a rowTheLionKing wrote:That goal by Steve Smith is ranked #1 as the bonehead plays of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Classy move my Gretzky following the 1987 Oilers Cup victory. After the assistant captains held the Cup, Gretz handed it directly to Smith for a redemption victory lap. Gretzky knew how guilty Smith felt as a result of the own goal gaffe.

Ditto .
It would have been interesting to see an MTL vs EDM final in 1986. Patrick Roy was a wall, and Claude Lemieux was not too bad, either.

What sucked is being an MTL fan living in Calgary at the time.
