Official 2008 Vancouver Whitecaps Season Thread

Maybe I should wear this shirt to honour the Whitecaps in the next home Lions game against the Argos. However, I know that it could cause a lot of confusion. Will I be supporting the team from the same city, or will I be supporting the team that also wears blue uniforms?

Congrats to the Whitecaps.....they deserve the press and pics, not Sullivan.

Great results in the playoffs for the Whitecaps, not sure how they got the home game, but that didn't hurt either.

Well said, gentlemen. We need as much praise as we can for our local soccer team - just like I'm sure the Lionbackers would appreciate if the Vancouver Southsiders praise the Lions.

I've indicated several times that I'm no longer criticizing the media attention on the Whitecaps. But I will criticize one aspect about the team that I feel is lacking.

In BC Place, GM Place, and Pacific Coliseum, there are banners commemorating the past achievements and championships of the Lions, Canucks, and Giants respectively. But there are no commemorative banners hanging from the rafters of Swangard Stadium to acknowledge the past achievements of the Whitecaps.

The Seattle Sounders sometimes play at Qwest Field when they were in the USL, and will make Qwest Field as the permanent home now that they've been promoted to the MLS. Now obviously the team is completely overshadowed by the Seattle Seahawks in Qwest Field. But despite all that, there are two banners hanging from the rafters Qwest Field to acknowledge their 2005 and 2007 USL-1 championship alongside the achievements of the Seahawks.




Okay, more thoughts about no criticisms.

In October 2006 at a home game against Calgary, the Lions held a pre-game ceremony to honour the Whitecaps. Then head coach, Bob Lilley, team captain Jeff Clarke, Tony Caig, Steve Klein, Geordie Lyall, Dave Morris, physiotherapist Dave Terlicher and team doctor Don Hedges received a loud ovation from the Lions faithful in the pre-game ceremony. The Whitecaps mascot posed with the Felions. So let's see whether the Lions will again invite the Whitecaps with their trophy in their final home game next week.

I for one, will be happy to CHEER for the Champion Whitecaps with their awesome looking trophy. I was so excited when the Village of Vancouver won the SoccerBowl over the NY Cosmos. :lol:

You're welcome. But just to let you know, the 1979 Whitecaps won the Soccer Bowl over the Tampa Bay Rowdies.



The Soccer Bowl trophy was stored at the BC Sports Hall of Fame museum for the long time, but I'm not sure if it's still there.

Unlike the Grey Cup and Stanley Cup, the Whitecaps trophy is for permanent keeps. I'm checking to see if the trophies are displayed anywhere. Notwithstanding certain trophies like the Cascadia Cup that is given around to the winners every year, there are at least 10 trophies that are owned by the Whitecaps.

There's the first one, the 1979 Soccer Bowl.

As the 86ers, they won four CSL championships, so that's four additional trophies, called the Mita Cup. And in 1990, there was the North American Championship and the 86ers won the Pepsi Cup over the Maryland Bays. So a total of five trophies by the 86ers.

The Whitecaps women won the W-League in 2004 and 2006, there there's two more trophies.

And the Whitecaps men won the USL-1 championship in 2006 and 2008, so that's two.

Of course, I'll post a picture if I could get one of all 10 trophies.

The 2009 MLS Cup will be held in Seattle's Qwest Field on November 22, 2009.

Let's see if it will be a sellout.
