The latest incarnation of the USFL held its first draft Tuesday, with two of the first three picks having B.C. Lions connections.
QB Shea Patterson, a former Michigan Wolverine, went first overall to the Michigan Panthers of the USFL, where he will at least have some name recognition. Patterson showed a few flashes in B.C.'s training camp last year and spent time on the practice roster before he was released in September and picked up by Montreal, where he dressed as a backup for five regular-season games and the Eastern Semi-Final. He rushed 11 times for 18 yards in short-yardage duty during the regular season and twice for 5 yards in the semi-final but didn't throw a CFL pass. He was released by Montreal just before the USFL draft.
QB Bryan Scott, who spent two weeks on B.C.'s offseason roster in 2017 and 10 months on Edmonton's offseason roster in 2019-20, was drafted third overall by the Philadelphia Stars. Like Patterson, Scott never threw a CFL pass.

It was an interesting way of running their draft. They did it in snake order with each round being dedicated to specific positions. First round was for QBs only. Also all players first had to sign a USFL contract to be draft eligible. So any player drafted is already under USFL contract for this year plus an option year. Apparently they can get out of their deals for an NFL opportunity but not for the CFL.

USFL could make it difficult to attract Practice Roster A players, but USFL could also end up as a bit of a development league for the CFL for guys who first spend a few seasons n the USFL.
Sigh. I'm not sure what's more tiresome. Spring league proponents too dumb to read 50 years of history or teams dumb enough to look at Shea Patterson's body of work and think he's a viable quarterback.

I could see the fact Patterson played collegiately at U of Michigan being marketing-attractive for a Michigan based USFL team but the entire USFL season will be played in Birmingham, Alabama FFS.
