Tough loss.
From looking so good. JJ10 played well. Sadly Chris Williams has not fit in
and has pushed Nick Moore out. The drop in the end zone was a killer.

I am now convinced that Wally won't be back next season. If the Lions had made the playoffs and then come close but lost out, then Wally might be tempted to give it another shot. But this team is far from close to anywhere but worst in the west and it won't be easy and certainly not probable that things will get turned around next season unless there are major changes, especially with the coaching staff.

It also seems unlikely that a bound for retirement Wally will be able to appoint Mark Washington as the new HC. The porous Lions D continues to give up big plays and as such DC Mark Washington has no longer the credibility to be considered as HC material and won't be accepted by the ticket buying fans, whoever they are.

The brilliance of LU sums up all my thoughts here. Sad and concerned times for this franchise. Sure hope Randy Ambrosie is paying close attention and somehow can speed up the process of Braley unloading it.
What remains is a series of decisions which surely must happen in order for faith in the Lions to be restored. It starts at the very top of the organization. With every passing week, the value of the franchise owned by David Braley continues to drop. With every humiliating setback on the field, the calls for coach/GM Wally Buono to step aside become louder; the realization on the part of assistant coaches, personnel staffers and players that massive organizational change is forthcoming becomes more clear.

The regrettable truth is that after two Grey Cup wins in 15 seasons under the winningest coach in league history, the Lions are same place as they were when Buono arrived after the 2002 season, the building where they play home games seemingly empty on a regular basis just as it was when Adam Rita was in charge and Damon Allen’s run had come to an end.

But the late, great Bob Ackles isn’t around to rescue Braley this time. Sadly, a golden era is coming to the end of its life cycle. The only question is whether the absentee owner knows it’s time, because the look on the face of the coach/GM after the game made it seem as if he knows what must be done.
— Really painful seeing the Lions get burned on surprise special teams plays week after week and they haven't tried one the entire season.

— What a brutal challenge. It was Washington who convinced him to throw it as he was half way on the field protesting the catch and Wally had to constrain him. Wasn't even that close and of course they could have used it later on, never mind burning a timeout.

— Like Danny and others, seen enough of Washington to know he is no long term answer. So many players look so very average to poor in his system. Revolving door on the defensive line and multiple position changes in the secondary and it makes little difference.
Safety is a black hole in his scheme. Thompson playing deep in centre of the field and nowhere near the play on those long TD plays that saw Lee and Gaitor burned badly. Washington would turn Tyler Loffler into nothing more than a pylon.

— Chris Williams officially a major bust. Isn't tall, isn't physical and probably lost a step too coming off ACL surgery. How often do we see him well behind coverage?
Time to re-insert Nick Moore and give others a chance too like Kenyon Parker and even Vandervoort for Ianuzzi given he was the 3rd overall pick in the draft and never gets reps.

Nice to see an increased amount of criticism leveled by LU at Wally and the Lions. It is a very fine line that a journalist has to walk because too much criticism results in media access to players and locker room gets restricted or denied. But things now are way past Wally being able to deflect or penalize his critics because he knows (but still may not publicly admit) that for the most part the criticism is deserved.

For a businessman at Braley's level selling the team is not so much about the money ( he already has more than he needs) as it is about "The Deal" which he most likely wants very much to "Win". The next owner, whoever he will be, is also a high powered deal maker and isn't going to overpay for a loosing team in a diminishing market in need of an extensive and likely expensive revival.

Braley needs to sell the team while he still can, before the start of next season or he risks having the team value drop even more. The sooner Braley accepts the "Loss on The Deal" that he is going to take with the sale of the Lions and thus the sooner the sale, the better for him and the Lions fans.

Well said, Sammy. :whs:

And Lowell. :whs:

Every painful loss renews discussion of Braley selling and Wally retiring.

I would think every painful loss makes Wally pine for true peace, relief from the strains of coaching and managing football. But Wally is loyal to Braley.

Neither man is young anymore. Both have had health issues. I would not think Braley loses sleep over the Lions. He has much bigger business involvements than the team. But one would think Wally pays a high price for the stress he endures.

As Sammy notes, one would hope Ambrosie tries to expedite matters.

Is it all about money for Braley? I cannot belive that.

Is it that the Lions are some kind of good luck charm for him? Sure. Why not? He loves the team.

He knows he has to cut the team loose. As everyone notes, the value drops with each painful loss.

Yes, it is his team. He has rescued it, and cherishes it. But it is also the team of this community. And it has also been a fixture in the league.

Do not risk the franchise, Mr. Braley. That would imperil the league. Sell it. Sell it in good time before next season. Wally is waiting on you to make a decision. As some wise person said, not making a decision that needs to be made is making a decision. Not making a decision has consequences.

Just IMO ...

The coaching staff are all at the same church this morning discussing the poor execution of the players.

It was not all bad in the game. Lots of sensational plays by both teams. Our performance was very good for the first 40 minutes or so. We saw some adjustments on offence and defence. They helped to bring us a good lead.

A beautiful first drive down the field, led by Jonathon Jennings.

A quick out to Manny.

I am not sure who once said this: "The biggest mistake a GM can make is to fall in love with his roster". Wally has never made this mistake.

I say: "The second biggest mistake a GM can make is to fall in love with his coaching staff". Wally has done this mistake too often. He is too loyal to his staff.

But this one hurt.

The RedBlacks look at tape. They look for vulnerabilities. Our STs are a favourite target of detailed game preparation.

We start to peel back on the backside of the kickoff. The kicker quickly reverses direction, and the game is on.

Momentum switch.

It pumped up the RedBlacks. And it deflated us.

The back bent on the initial fumble but the lead was still significant. All the Lions needed to do is show some resilience and some smarts. The actual response showed this team sadly has neither. The players have given up on this season and the coaches. The went so meekly into their funk, it was disturbing to watch. There didn't seem to be a single person on the sidelines from the coaching on down that showed more than an obligatory interest. Players were not fired up, coaches were not fired up. It was almost as if they were in a complete fog.

At this point, I think one can really only hope that the remainder of the season is a continuation of the same. With the increasing systemic failure on display, it only makes it harder to maintain the status quo. Since it seems that most now agree that significant change is essential, the more they suck now, the more likely that change occurs and hopefully that applies to the ownership on down.

the way Farhan was talking at the half was that there may be a sale in the off season? Just speculation?

As to the underlined part, sadly I have felt this way for most of this season. I wanted the Lions to win but I just have felt for a long time that because winning masks deficiencies, a total collapse is the only path to meaningful change with the Lions, including ownership.
