They have a "buy 3, get 1 free" promotion on tickets.
I noticed that when looking on TM. It has to be the most invisible way to do a promotion you can find (unlike the $5 kids which was easy to see).
Even worse, here is what is still on the "event info" popup
BC Lions vs. Montreal Alouettes

Hey BC 1988,
Yes, totally agree that TD Place is a great venue but also very fan friendly. I had a blast despite the football on display for the 1st half. Also my first visit to Ottawa and loved it; the free time on the trip was very tight but we are heading back for Grey Cup so we didn't feel to hard done by. The price of this trip was less expensive than previous Op Orange ventures to the East so the more compressed time frame did have some benefits for the wallet.

I don't exactly recall what section we were in but we were overlooking the 40-50 yard lines from the Northside..maybe about halfway up the stand. If you heard someone yelling "Southsiders Suck!!!" with great abandon....that was me. I was trying to get the Northsiders around us to join in but I think the Southsiders are more enthusiastic with the chants. The Ottawa fans were not above teasing but they were very pleasant; chatted with a couple of ladies in front of us who very kindly explained the chants and how when a questionable flag is thrown, you yell "mouchoir!".

I think the presence of BC fans was mostly a curiosity for the Redblacks faithful; most of the responses were of the "what the hell are you doing way out here?!?!" variety. Probably the best response we got though was a youngster in a Lions shirt who came up to us and said thanks for representing Lions fans.

Totally recommend joining an Operation Orange trip. Though I did feel a little wistful at the thought of how BC Place does pale in comparison.
Yes, it was a pleasant enough tone around us too--but as you say (and I noticed as well) they aren't used to seeing Orange in their territory.

That's funny "mouchoir" translates to "handkerchief"--I've been to MTL a few times, but never when an Als game was on--I imagine they say that there too. Another thing I noticed was the amount of French heard spoken on the streets of Ottawa.

When you go back for GC, try to make time --amidst all the hard partying;)--for the Parliament Buildings tours--with the partial dismantling and eventual rebuilding that is planned to start next year for the Centre Block, it won't be possible to see it inside in it's original state by next summer. Our two tour guides described the incredibly ambitious plans. They are almost finished the West Block work, and will be moving the House of Commons chamber there for the following 10 years. The Senate chamber will move offsite to the Government Conference Centre at 2 Rideau St.

Instead we get this odd "CSA certified hard hat" promotion for the first 3,000 fans. I wonder how many will be eager to show up early for this?
Construction trades night!

Lamest promotion ever.
A little peculiar but I will be in line early. I gotz to have me swag! :tease: :clown:

Does that make me a swag whore?
Well at least you have the right attitude Cardiac. Others it would seem would rather dump on sponsors and partners of the Lions when they make promotional efforts to get free swag into the hands and onto the heads of fans. Sometimes I wonder why the Lions even bother given the gratitude so often shown.

Industry Trades Authority of BC has been an official partner of the Lions for a couple of years now. They bring you the "If I wasn't a football player I'd be a ............. " . They partner up with Marks and the BC Construction Association to promote trades without which not much would happen in this province and it's deemed lame. Given the Lions colours are orange the hard hats should show quite nicely tonight. I think the kids will love them.

What is particularly cool about this promotion is the fact it is very much applicable to all BC. I think most promotions are but this one really doesn't come across as mostly Vancouver/Lower Mainland centric. I think it shows a degree of out of the box thinking by the Lions which I have wishing for on this forum. So yes, props to the Leos.

Too bad they couldn't hand out more as it actually would look cool with a swath of shiny orange in the stands. I actually picked up a hard hat ages ago with the idea of jazzing it up with logos, etc but haven't gotten around to it. This saves me the trouble.

BTW I had to stop and think about the name of the promotion....maybe for some folks "construction trades" sounds a little human resources-y?

Could be human resources-y in a way. What ITA has been trying to do with the promotions at Lions games is open up the eyes of younger fans who might not yet have a career path in mind to the idea that trades are a very viable option. Speaking from experience of having worked in industrial operations such as sawmills, OSB plants, mining and logging there are definitely shortages of tradespeople. Just about every such operation around is always looking for millwrights, electricians, heavy-duty mechanics, welders etc.

This new Lions initiative is pretty cool.

It was awesome to meet a couple of you on operation orange and sorry for not being able to put names to faces on here!

This is my second season traveling to every road game with the team and I think TD Place is the coolest vibe. A lot of it has to do with how revitalized the Landsdowne area has become with bars, other establishments and the fact so many young professionals live so close. Therein lies a huge difference as I am sure it has been talked about at length that the demographics around BC Place have changed drastically.

Regina/Calgary/Hamilton/Winnipeg all provide the authentic CFL environment, but a game in Ottawa just feels like "the place to be." People ripped the REDBLACKS name when it was announced. But guess what? A lot of young men AND women are decked out in the flannel shirts every game. The brand there has indeed taken off.

To me, the Lions' challenge is simple (its process and execution perhaps not as easy). There are THOUSANDS of people within walking distance of BC Place, yet we obsess about the commute for a guy from Maple Ridge or Aldergrove or Delta. That's not going to get simpler over time. So instead of blowing our brains out trying cut his travel time to a game from 90 minutes to say, 60 minutes why not furiously pursue the low hanging fruit? Get those living and working downtown and hanging out in bars all around the stadium to attend games.

I see no reason why you can't apply some of what's worked in Ottawa here. Young urban people aren't going to be massively different in Yaletown than they are in the Glebe (although I realize having an NFL team so close makes things more challenging). Offer affordable tickets, a cool vibe, a compelling product, drink specials, fun atmosphere, and get them hooked! IMO, it's about 80% brand perception (which I know the club is working hard to alter).

I agree with introducing more targeted marketing to young urban people in the Yaletown and False Creek areas, but to me "the low hanging fruit" is your current fanbase, which skews older, more blue collar and more suburban, and includes families with young kids. The season ticket base has been eroding sharply in recent years. Targeting a new demographic while letting an established market erode is an inefficient marketing practice.

Based on Ticketmaster, there will be a very small crowd tonight. Soon the Lions will be drawing less than Toronto and Montreal at home.

Hey Matt, not to worry, at least from my standpoint. I deliberately keep my real identity under close wraps here on Lionbackers. In actuality, I am a Riderville bot

Oh boy! As of 4 pm today.
This is what can happen when your ST base dips below 10,000 and you have a less than desirable eastern team coming in while riding a 3 game losing streak. Hard to believe there is more than 15,000 sold. Will be interesting to hear the "announced" attendance.

Maybe I'm wrong. Sure the kids will like the free hats, or free anything. Hope the trades come out in force and fill the stadium. If this were part of some larger marketing strategy, it might make more sense.

The Lions marketing has been terrible for years, just like Toronto's was, which is reflected in their declining attendance. This promo is just a something that came about because a sponsor wanted to do some advertising and pr.

I think they have given up on announcing the crowd numbers for awhile now....
There must be a mercy rule that can be invoked for attendance like this....
