Some early impressions ...

QB ... Lulay, Jackson, Reilly; Leonard may or may not stick on the PR.

RB ... Robertson #1, Brown #2 and Kick Returner, Harris backup RB and Kick Returner, Smith to the PR

It sounds like Wally wants to keep both Brown and Smith

FB ... Lumbala #1, Cronk on the bubble, Lee injured

SB Imports ... Simon, Black, Moore, Johnson on the bubble

SB NI ... Gore, Peterson, Jackson injured

Wideout Imports ... Collins, Perry on the bubble

Wideout NI ... Foster, Iannuzzi

Tackles ... Archibald, Olafioye; Hennessey PR, Randolph on the bubble

Centre ... Reid, Sorensen on the bubble, Baboulas on the bubble (but highly regarded IMO)

Guards ... HamR, Valli, Newman, Jones PR, Sage on the bubble (but a highly regarded draft pick IMO)
..............

DE ... Hunt, Williams, Johnson, Henley hidden somewhere, Brown on the bubble, Hodgson on the bubble

DT ... Taylor, Mitchell PR, Bryant hidden somewhere

LBs ... Elimimian, Leonard, McKenzie, Henderson, McCullough on the bubble, Bighill on the bubble

LBs NI ... Yurichuk, Goesse

LB/DB ... Banks, Reddick

CBs ... Marsh, Hall

CBs NI ... Sanchez, Mahmoudi PR, Carter PR

HB ... Phillips, Franks, Hyland, Williams

Safety ... LaRose, Arakgi, Muamba PR
.............

McCallum and O'Neill ... the present and the future of the kicking game in good hands, and feet

McCullough ... long snapper
...............

Some guys the team would like to keep, that Wally may have to finesse (injured?)

I've just made my first attempt to predict the opening-day 46-man roster. There's lots of wiggle room on injured lists and the practice roster but picking 46 was pretty easy:

No way do they cut Carter, he has size over Mahmoudi and is just as quick. He'll end up on the PR IMHO. I'm also not sold with Aragki at Safety. He looked lost all last year taking reps at that position. I think they'll find a way to get Hyland into that spot, even if he is an import.

Sorry I've been out of the loop, and I'm not trying to stir the pot, but what happened to Matt Chapdelaine? Haven't seen his name anywhere.
I'd love you to say it to my face because you'd only say it once...if you ever had the courage to say it at all!! Blitz, 05/24/2008

I don't see a whisper about young Matt Chapdelaine our 6th overall pick.

I had not noticed the absence of Matt Chapdelaine until just now on reading these posts.

I guess he was cut in the off season. Without notice to the media, nor on the website.

Was he on the Practice Roster officially last year? Or was it one of those territorial protection situations?

He was drafted so he won't be a territory protection player, so he has to show up somewhere on what the Lions did with him. Calling LU to help us out on this MIA in pure CFL style.

I don't think you can keep O'Neal on the practice roster without someone picking him up. Kid is just too good. I also disagree with cutting Matt Carter, I think he'll at least be on the practice roster.

Overall though, I'm cautiously optimistic going into this year. Not too sure I like going with only 3DL, but at the same time it has its advantages: we finally have a new defense so the book isn't out on what we're doing...yet, we can keep our D-linemen fresh by rotating them, and we make use of our talent at linebacker.

On offense, as long as Lulay plays like the 2nd half Lulay we're in good shape. Our receivers look promising with Simon being supported by Gore, Peterson and Foster. I'm a bit concerned about our running game though. Last year Robertson struggled carrying the ball from the backfield. He'd have some games where he'd do nothing until he padded his stats with one huge gain. But who am I kidding, we rarely hand the ball off anyways.

Well I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out. The NFL is certainly moving towards 3-4's (of course many teams still run 4-3's). Here in the CFL, I guess we'll see. If it works out WELL, the other teams will have to do two things. Copy the schemes for their D and change personell/strategies for their offense. Really does show how this team has changed too. They went from not enough skilled linebackers to having a deluge. Interesting that they'd choose to turn the drawback of too many into a postive of a different scheme.

We have a glut of Db's, do think they will keep Carter but who knows?

The terms 4-3 and 3-4 are almost passe. The way teams rotate players to react to the down and yardage situation almost play to play it's more like front 7. You'd probably be hard pressed to find situations where the same alignment and personnel are used 3 plays in a row.

You're right about Carter. He's been hurt and has missed most of camp so I haven't had a chance to see him in action. I'm sure the coaches will want to give him a chance. He may end up on the injured list. The Lions have a glut of non-import DBs but I don't think any of them are ready to step in if Sanchez goes down.

Hamid Mahmoudi was the last non-import on my 46-man list. He looked lost in practice on the weekend, often going one way when the receiver had gone the other way. I didn't see enough of Cauchy Muamba to know whether he is a better long-range option but he has probably had fewer reps than Mahmoudi at corner.

I hadn't even thought of Matt Chapdelaine until you mentioned him. I hope someone finds out what happened to him.

Way too early to be picking the team IMO. They've only played one exhibition game.

The coaches have probably had most of the roster picked for some time. We're just trying to catch up.

To me, there are some tough tough decisions to be made on the defensive side of the ball, we have a surplus of Front 7 players who all can play.

LB
DT
DE

Henley and Bryant both showed well, the Lb corps has missed Joe Henderson most of Camp but he has not been missed, Mitchell and Taylor would seem to be to similar of players etc.

Would not surprise me if we see another trade or two before the Cuts, and Brown and Smith both are likely to make the team.

Michael Carter is an intersting case as well, NCAA Div I ball playing NI with great tools, but he has been "injured", i'm sure they would love to keep him somehow.
