The TEAM 1040 just reported some sad news a little while ago: Luc Bourdon, the Canucks' first round draft pick in 2005, died today in a motorcycle accident in his native New Brunswick.
Only 21... WAY too young.
RIP Luc.

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

What a tragic loss. How sad it is when a young person with so much promise and future goes so tragically.
I saw the thread title and hoped it was a review of his life to where he was until this - a young hockey career just reaping some of the benefits from the hard work he has put in to get to pro.
I am not a fan of these high powered motorcycles but having had a chance to ride one I can see the attraction of it.

Life sometimes is just not fair. Condolences to the Bourdon family and friends.
He was just coming into his own at the NHL level, very sad day for his family, my sincerest condolences to all.
As for the crotch rocket, well there is only one reason to purchase one, and that is never a very wise thing IMHO.

You are absolutely spot on, Rammer. It is a terrible tragedy and a sickening waste.Rammer wrote:He was just coming into his own at the NHL level, very sad day for his family, my sincerest condolences to all.

While I love the idea of riding a motorcycle myself, I have been privy to or heard or read far too many instances of the killing and maiming power of these modes of transport. I stick to a bicycle - which is risky enough... not because of the bike, but because most drivers treat you as invisible.
It speaks volumes that his mother was very opposed to Luc getting a motorbike. Does anyone now wonder why?
After the Roethlisberger incident (he was unbelievably lucky), if I were a pro sports GM, I would have a clause in all my players' contracts forbidding them from riding motorcycles - on or off-season.

Interesting piece by LU on Lorne Plante in the June 5 edition of the Province. Apparently Plante had a motorcycle accident over the offseason and he has sworn off motorcycles until his career is over. He indicated that the idea of a no-cycle clause in his contract with the Lions was out there.Lions4ever wrote:You are absolutely spot on, Rammer.
