And unfortunately, you cannot predict whether the game will be worth watching from the start. In my opinion, only the 3rd period was worth watching in today's game. So missing the unexciting first period for some free ice cream would have been worth it.

There are several Ben & Jerry's in the Seattle area. I actually ate at two of them today. And when Baskin Robbins had their free promotion three years ago, I actually went to four of them in one day.
