Hearst Randolph "Randy" Duncan, Jr. (March 15, 1937 – September 27, 2016) was an American gridiron football quarterback and lawyer.

He played college football at the University of Iowa. He played in two Rose Bowls (1957, 1959) and has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Duncan was the #1 overall pick in the 1959 NFL Draft and played professionally for Canadian Football League's BC Lions and the American Football League's Dallas Texans.

As a kid, we lived close to Empire Stadium. We would go down to the field behind the stadium to watch practice in the evening. We saw Randy Duncan snd the boys. He would lift up the face bar of his helmet and spit between reps. LOL It was noticeable because no one else seemed to spit, by any means or method. Football, baseball, hockey. Lots of spitting. The hockey guys spit at their bench. Ughhh Basketball guys cannot spit, so it seems that spitting is not necessary, more of a habit.

I was too young to know much about football at the time, but we knew he had been the #1 pick in the NFL, and we got him.

RIP Randy Duncan.

Two greats came North that year: Randy and his teammate Willie Flemming. As fast as Willie was on foot, Randy was as slow. They provided an amazing amount of excitement for this young fan, though the results didn't significantly improve for some years, when the other Rose Bowl starter (Cal's Joe Kapp) came over from Calgary. That formed the basis for the Joe and Willy show, a delight on the ground and in the air. I wish we had more of those highlights on video; they were a treat!

But Randy's decision started things moving for the Lions.
