1990
Under new Head Coach Lary Kuharich and General Manager Joe Kapp, the Lions generated a good deal of pre-season hype with the signings of quarterback Major Harris, who was fourth in Heisman Trophy balloting, former New York Jets star Mark Gastineau and Doug Flutie. However, the publicity did not translate into on-field victories and turmoil plagued the team. Two coaches left very early in the season amid controversy. The Lions tied their first game against Calgary in the dying seconds of the contest as Doug Flutie tossed a “Hail Mary” pass to Ray Alexander in the end zone. However, the team kept close in every game winning a tight one against Winnipeg at home on a last-second Passaglia field goal, and then losing one to Hamilton in the final seconds. The eastern road trip to Ottawa and Toronto, during which the Lions lost both games, spelled the beginning of the end for the coach and general manager. The following week the team dropped another one to Toronto 49-19 and one week later Jim Young was behind the bench as interim Head Coach. Bob O'Billovich took over as Vice President of Football Operations and Head Coach on Sept. 14 and promptly guided the team to a strong 34-4 victory over Hamilton. The team gained stability and although they missed the playoffs, “Obie's” charges went 4-3 over the last seven games of the season and their strong finish fuelled hopes for a much brighter 1991season. Highlights of the season included Lui Passaglia's new pro football scoring record as he booted his 2,238th point, finishing the year with 2,312 points. Lui also became the longest-playing Lion in history, appearing in a total of 236 games, overtaking Al Wilson's previous mark of 233 games.

Did any of you attend the 1990 GC in BC Place? Who would have thought that the Blue Bombers would put 40 points in the second half. Danny McManus and Less Browne would experience deja vu four years later in the same stadium. But for the team, it's the longest drought for the existing CFL teams.

I was there
Tickets were very easy to come by

Battle was a monster
I always thought Edemonton was like 16-2 that season but the bombers had the best record in the CFL and showed it in this game

An old news video on the firing of Lary Kuharich.

About a week after this news report, Joe Kapp himself was fired as well.

1990 season opener for both teams. I guess with Doug Flutie hadn't adjusted to the CFL game, Joe Paopao was aging after coming back from retirement, and Major Harris only a rookie, new coach Lary Kuharich decided to start the three year incumbent backup QB, Rickey Foggie. I don't remember starting RB Kennard Martin. This was also Wally Buono's head coaching debut having replaced Kuharich in Calgary and who would have thought that he would end up being the most winningest CFL coach?

Very odd to see Rickey Foggie playing as a receiver. He was released from the team shortly after and was picked up by Toronto.

BC 43 at Toronto 68

The highest scoring CFL game.

Edmonton 32 at BC 13

Jim Young as the interim head coach after Lary Kuharich was fired.
It also featured a rare play with RB Chris Skinner throwing a TD pass.

BC 34 at Hamilton 4

Bob O'Billovich's first game as HC of the Lions. It looks like Joe Paopao was still the starting at QB at game 12. And former western all-star Larry Willis was still with the team although he will soon be released and picked up by Edmonton.

I do miss Tony Cherry who was picked up by the Stampeders.

Rare footage of Major Harris playing QB in the season finale.

EDF: Toronto 17 at Winnipeg 20

Toronto's offense had 689 PF, so a job well done for by Winnipeg's defense in only contraining and limiting them to just 17 points. I remember the game was deadlocked at 17 until late in the fourth when Winnipeg QB Tom Burgess made a very long run that put the team in field goal position. Trevor Kennerd then made the game winning FG.

WDF: Edmonton 43 at Calgary 23

Since winning the 1987 GC, Edmonton finished first in the west for two seasons but suffered a pair of WDF upset losses. It looks like the Eskimos were very angry and hungry so they made a playoff upset of their own and ruined Wally Buono's first playoff game appearance.

Another article on passing of Lary Kuharich by the Calgary Sun:

Kuharich was hired by the Lions in 1990 but was fired after the Leos opened the season with a 2-7-1 record. But he and GM Joe Kapp recruited stars Doug Flutie  :yahoo: :beauty: :towel: and Mark Gastineau :wag: :puke: :bawl: :bang: :-? .

The debut of two CFL legends - Doug Flutie as QB in the CFL, and Wally Buono as CFL head coach in the 1990 season opener.

This was a transition game as Lary Kuharich was just fired and newly hired Bob O'Billovich didn't join the team just yet, so GM Jim Young served as interim head coach for this game.

It's already established that the 1990 season for the Lions was full of turmoil and along with that, totally unpredictable as well in that even though they lost many games, they could also sometimes appear invincible as shown in this game late in the season in that they go to Edmonton win convincingly against the eventual west division champions.

Interim Lions coach Jim Young wanted to have a good impression so he dressed up with a nice white dress shirt and tie.
