1984
The biggest trade since the Kapp deal brought all-star James Parker to the Lions defence from Edmonton. A number of new faces gave the club more depth than ever before, but a second straight first place finish was dampened by the late season loss of Dewalt to injury. In a repeat Western Final matchup at B.C. Place, Winnipeg triumphs and goes on to win the Grey Cup. Average crowds in excess of 40,000 in each of the first two years in the new stadium reversed the club's fortunes financially and debenture holders are receiving early repayment. Both Joe Kapp and Tom Brown were inducted into the Football Hall of Fame.

You are right but let's face it. Don Matthews never did play his back up QBs much right up until he retired. Some exceptions in there but not many times.

no he didnt, which cost him in montreal when calvilio got hurt and couldnt play the eastern final a couple yerars ago. There was no excuse not to give his backup some time that year as montreal had 1st place locked up 1/2 way thru the season and had many games out of reach after 3/4 of most games but he refused to play the backup. Thats way i have trouble when people say hes the beat coach of all time?

The only time back-up QB Tim Cowan performed well was in the 1984 season finale when the Lions clinched first place with a 20-3 win.

Whatever the Lions did two weeks earlier, they couldn't do it again in the 1984 WDF. :tp:

These articles talk about the 1984 season-ending injury to Roy Dewalt when he broke his collarbone after being tackled by Don Moen and James Curry.

What did you think about the BC Lions 1984 season? For me, it was very bittersweet in that in defending their west division title and going all the way this time, the Lions had an even better regular season than the 11-5 1983 season with a 12-3-1 and clinching first in the west again.

BC 3 at Winnipeg 25

BC 17 at Montreal 33

BC 34 at Edmonton 32

BC 40 at Ottawa 33

BC 41 at Calgary 13

Winnipeg 3 at BC 20

This game clinched first place for the Lions in the west.

But come playoff time in the WDF, the Lions were soundly defeated by the Blue Bombers. :bawl:
Winnipeg 31 at BC 14

Thanks for that thread, it's awesome to see the records of the matches from 1984! I've been trying to learn more about Canadian football since I'm not that familiar with it, and it's great to see historical games, it allows you to see not just the changes in the jersey designs, but most importantly, the changes in tactics as well.

Apparently in 1984 they were called the Sundancers.
