Yikes, that is eye opening. No wonder we are in trouble as a league.

Be safe.

Maybe they are all unpaid volunteers.

Apparently not Ambrosie. $750,000 +

Qualifies as a private corporation for reporting purposes though so we know what the accountants tell us.

You might be overpaying your commissioner and his too large staff when 3 out of a 9 team league, in the 3 largest cities in Canada, can't draw enough fans to stadiums to make a profit. :dizzy:

CFL.ca forum reflects a totally indifferent attitude typical of the CFL imo and is a purrfect example of the non accountability the league enjoys. There are no posters from Mexico, Europe, or Japan. Team forums go months without a post. It should be the #1 site for CFL discussion and could be a lot better than it is but it is not.

Fan interest measured by participation in the forum would tell you to shut the league down immediately.

This guy actually wrote the code for the first and only 3-down, 12-man stat system which auto populates to all rosters, profiles and stats and designed and operates the website which is unique to the CFL.

He's a pretty valuable individual in the system. Probably one of the folks on the list you shouldn't dump on.

didn't say there was anything wrong with being website admin. Just pointing out one example of how the titles are not always what they seem. As in they are not all high salaried upper management as many of their titles might indicate

Going over the CFL staff directory list and other than Ambrosie do not recognize one name as that of a former player.

Seems odd given so many of the players have a university education to go along with the passion for the game. Acknowledge that many do continue on with individual teams and media broadcasters but strange they never made it to the league office.

Even Ambrosie is the first recent player to be named commissioner. Jake Gaudaur, way back when before him.

Between Gaudaur and Ambrosie were former Rider and Lion Bill "The Undertaker" Baker, one time and briefly Lion Doug Mitchell and who can forget former Alouette Larry Smith who brought us the US experiment. The one thing most sports league Commissioners have in common these days it's that they are all lawyers by trade.

Good reminder about Larry Smith. Wasn't he the one who started the US expansion phase? I seem to remember desperate times back then as well. He may have also been the guy to bring Pezim and Ornest in to rescue the league.

Also a few referees out there that are ex players so some do end up working for the league that way.

Bill Baker was in charge when Pezim bought the club in 1989. It was Baker's only year as Commish in what was briefly a split duty job. Baker was President/Chief Operating Officer while Toy McMurtry was Chairman/Chief Financial Officer. Pezim declared bankruptcy with the league briefly taking the team over during the 1992 season, Smith's first as Commish.

Ornest bought the Argos from Carling-O'Keefe at the end of 1988 which was also about the time the league would be having a Commissioner change from Mitchell to Baker. The sale was likely approved in Mitchell's final weeks in charge. Ornest would sell the club to the trio of McNall, Candy and Gretzky in 1991 when Donald Crump was Commissioner. Ornest, a Canadian, did have a sports ownership history having founded the Triple-A Vancouver Canadians in 1978 and owning the St.Louis Blues from 1983-86.
