Anthony Calvillo?

I find Danny Barrett to be an interesting name. He was green as the Rider jerseys when Shivers rolled the dice. He had 1 year as QBC under Wally in Calgary then 2 years in BC; 1998 as assistant OC/QBC and backup QB and 1999 as receivers coach. Then he was hired as a HC a position he held for 7 years. His final 4 years in Regina he went 11-7 then 3 straight 9-9 campaigns before the Riders cleaned house. Somewhat similar to Vic Rapp in BC he just couldn't get the club to the next level. Since leaving the Riders he's added another decade of experience to his reaume with stops at U of Buffalo, Central Florida and the past 2 years with the Miami Dolphins. In theory he should be much better prepared to be a successful CFL HC today than he was when he left Saskatchewan after the 2006 season.

Kerry Joseph now out as OC. Staying where he is.

It appears the HC announcement tomorrow will demonstrate how much influence Joe Mack will have in Alouetteville.... Considering the train wreck he was part of in Winnipeg, Montreal fans could be in for a heap of trouble.

Mike Sherman? Hmmmm ... had some success with Green Bay. Recently with a high school team. His CFL salary will pale in comparison to the NFL. But it will surely beat an American high school. LOL

Sherman is best known for coaching the Packers from 2000-2005. He finished with a 57-39 record in his six years in Green Bay, leading the team to three division titles, four playoff appearances, and two NFC Divisional Round games.

Sherman's most recent coaching gig was at Nauset Regional High School in Massachusetts, resigning in May after two seasons and a 4-18 record.

Hmmmm ... Can't coach high school, but can coach CFL? Moving between college, high school, the CFL and the NFL ... This fan would not say never to any transition and success. But success in one does not mean success in another. Sherman is no guarantee of success in the CFL. Don Matthews was hugely successful in American high schools, and obviously just as successful in the CFL. Tedford has had success in college. His one foray as HC in the CFL did not work out, but it may not all have been on him. One year and out with a 7-11 record.

This CFL fan will be surprised if Kavis shows some good judgment in his capacity as GM.

And whither Anthony Calvillo? Despite all his success as a QB, one always felt he worked in his own bubble. Little interaction with others. He hardly seems of the temperament to be a coach.

This is a risk. Hiring US coaches with no CFL experience has been always hit or miss and more often miss. I think this is a mistake. Montreal's team is old and not very good and bringing in a big name ex NFL coach I doubt will change it. The CFL game is total different. May be another Dale Hawkins.

Nothing wrong with his resume. He has punched the card at all the appropriate places.

High school, college, or the pros, this fan sees motivation as part of the necessary job skills. We saw what June Jones was able to do in Hamilton.

This fan kind of likes the hire. Sherman has vast experience and notable success at the pro level. We will see how it shakes out. No guarantees.

After an NFL salary, and then a high school salary (almost an honorarium after the NFL heydays), he is somewhere in between now in the CFL. A guy has to work. LOL

This fan respects his decision to work at the high school level, albeit without success. That is certainly the grass roots. Don Matthews learned his craft coaching high school in the Pacific Northwest, in his case, with great success.
