The Lions have rounded out their coaching staff, hiring former Saskatchewan assistant Markus Howell as passing game coordinator and receivers coach and confirming the return of OL coach Dan Dorazio and running backs coach Mike Lionello.
The BC Lions Football Club today announced that Markus Howell has been named passing game coordinator and receivers coach.
Working alongside newly-appointed Lions offensive coordinator Jarious Jackson for the past two seasons in Saskatchewan, Howell is set to enter his eighth year in the coaching ranks following a very successful 11-year playing career.
Tutoring dynamic receivers Duron Carter and Naaman Roosevelt along with quarterback sensation Brandon Bridge, Jackson and Howell helped the ‘Riders notch a league-high 35 passing majors in 2017 and the third-best passing efficiency rating at 101.1.
“Markus was very high on Jarious’ list of potential coaching candidates and we’re extremely pleased to have him coming aboard,” said head coach Wally Buono.
“Given their previous history together, Jarious and Markus can hit the ground running here in BC and begin the process of implementing their passing offence.”
Howell began his coaching career with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 2011 and spent five seasons there before moving to Saskatchewan in 2016. The Texas Southern grad was drafted 25th overall by the ‘Bombers in 2000 and also spent time in Ottawa and Calgary in addition to Winnipeg as a receiver, defensive back and returner. He enjoyed a Grey Cup win with Calgary in 2008.
The addition of Howell rounds-out the Leos’ offensive coaching staff for 2018 which also includes offensive line coach Dan Dorazio who enters his 15th season with the club, as well as running backs coach Mike Lionello who returns for his third season.

I think Nik Lewis would make a great coach as he knows these young guys and he played at a high level in the backfield and at the slot. Nothing against this new guy however.

Not sure how you can name top OCs and not have Lapo in the mix. What he's been able to do in Winnipeg is nothing short of remarkable. He's taken a QB that just about everyone in the league would deem "average" just a couple of years ago, and helped get him to a 71% completion percentage and QB efficiency of 103.8 (highest among starting QBs in both categories). The Bombers also put up more points in 2017 than anyone else (554).
Further, LaPolice has put together a dangerous offense with "decent" but "middle of the pack" receivers. Adams, Denmark, Feoli-Gudino, and the little runt Dressler don't exactly cause mismatches for other teams' defenses. He's also been able to maximize Andrew Harris's talents, re-energizing him in front of a solid O-line, making him the focal point of the offense. You don't see his "I'm not being used effectively" tantrums like you did in BC.

I agree about Nichols being an average QB before he got to Winnipeg. I would also rank Winnipeg's receiving corps among the worst in the league. Adams is the only elite receiver among the bunch. Denmark is a wily veteran who was released in 2016, allegedly for salary cap reasons, and brought back halfway through the season due to injuries. Dressler is a also a salary-cap castoff who was among the first players cut by Chris Jones when he took over in Saskatchewan in 2016. The Winnipeg offence revolves around Andrew Harris as a rusher and receiver. It somehow works.

Points for are a bit deceiving. While the Bombers led the CFL with 554 they finished second in points on offense to Edmonton. Still nothing to sneeze at. Winnipeg scored 480 offensive points to Edmonton's 489. The Bombers led the CFL with 11 Return TDs and FGs with 56. They finished 5th in both rushing and passing TDs and 7th in net offence. While they led the league in rushing they finished 8th in passing. Lapo has done a great job of putting together the sort of offense the works for Nicholls, that being a ball control offence. They rely on the run, a short high percentage passing game; dominated by Harris out of the backfield, and above all protection of the ball. Bomber QBs surrendered a league low 10 interceptions while the Bombers picked off 25 themselves. Dressler isn't the deep threat he was when he scared the crap out of me but he and Denmark make for a very good tandem of possession receivers, purrfect for the type of offence they run.

Points well made, David.
LaPolice has made a potent offence out of some ordinary makings.
Harris is a rare, still underrated talent IMO. Stronger than one thinks. As durable as a Tonka Toy, as they used to say about Walter Payton. Extremely effective out of the backfield on passes. He knows how to land, to fall, to get down, avoiding serious injury. He instinctively knows angles, leverage, and escapability as a runner. He has some explosiveness. For the CFL game he is the full package.
This CFL fan is happy for him that he is at home in Winnipeg, his birthplace. O'Shea and LaPolice obviously appreciate his talents and know how to exploit them. Not fully appreciated here? Not fully exploited? Possibly. His unhappiness here was evident.
Agree about the ordinariness of the receiving crew.
Nichols. LaPo brought his talents to the fore. Decent arm. Focused on what needs to be done. Manages the game. Takes what is there, as Johnny Unitas used to say.
It works. Full credit to LaPo.
Head Coach here next year? Please, God, yes. Ed Hervey and Paul LaPolice. They would make a very capable, sellable foundation for an organization still greatly in need of change and updating.
Just IMO ....

Yes, Winnipeg led the league with 554 points but the Bombers also scored a league-leading 166 points off turnovers, including 8 defensive touchdowns. Take those points off turnovers away and the team scoring totals look a lot different:

If kick returns are deducted, Calgary and Toronto would fall behind B.C., which didn't score any kick return TDs.
