Might as well add Kelly Bates as the O line coach to the fantasy coaching staff. He is currently coaching in Usports, I think.
Bates certainly could be looking for new work soon. He's currently in NCAA Div II football as HC of the SFU Clan. The Clan has yet to win a game in the 3 seasons under Bates going 0-29 while being outscored by a staggering 1365-321. They actually had decent bookends to the 2017 season starting out with a 34-28 loss and finishing with a 24-21 loss this past weekend. The latter may have been a sympathy effort by Western Oregon given they put up 82 points against the Clan up on Burnaby Mountain earlier in the season. In between though? 0-8 losing by an average of 62-7.
^^Oops. Maybe the Lions shouldn't hire Bates. But I have to admit I was a big fan of Bates when he was playing for the Lions.

With a name like Clan and the Scottish heritage it intimates perhaps they don't want to pay a cent in severance. Lad ye have to stay 'cause we no kin pay good money to send ye away.

SFU playing in the division they're in now is comparable to an AHL team playing in the NHL. They need to come back to CIAU.

Or fold the program. They’re an embarrassment to Canada.

Division they play in shouldn't matter at this point. They've been back in NCAA Div II for 7 or 8 years now, long enough to turn the athletes in the program over twice and the results continue to get worse. Are they that lousy at recruiting? Are they challenged or at a disadvantage recruiting kids to play in Canada? Is the program badly underfunded or are they lacking scholarships compared to the competition?

SFU seem to think they're too good to be in the CIAU. Gordon Shrum has always dreamed of playing in the Rose Bowl and has always enamoured with the hype of the NCAA

There are many SFU alumni blaming none other than Jacque Chapdelaine for his quick bail out to the Riders after they felt he made a long term commitment to the Clan and some suggest that they were shocked he left so quickly.

Kelly Bates was then put in the horrible position of starting from first base as with JC's departure the recruiting went out the window.

That combined with UBC's recent successes has hurt SFU's program.

Not that they did much better when they were in the CIAU (sorry that should be CIS - still haven't gotten used to that name). In eight years, two with a winning record, one year a game below .500, and the rest :tp:

Year Coach Overall Standing
Canada West (CIS) (2002–2009)
2002 Chris Beaton 2–6 6th
2003 Chris Beaton 5–3 2nd
W Canada West semi-final
W Hardy Trophy
L Uteck Bowl
2004 Chris Beaton 3–5 6th
2005 Chris Beaton 0–7–1 7th
2006 Frank Boehres 0–7–1 7th
2007 Dave Johnson 0–8 7th
2008 Dave Johnson 5–3 4th
W Canada West semi-final
L Hardy Trophy
2009 Dave Johnson 1–6 7th
CIS: 16–47–2

Maybe we can just appoint all of the litigants to coaching positions, so they can just drop this lawsuit and we can get on with the sale of the ball club, pronto!

So Arland Bruce will be our new head coach, Larry Thompson will be our receivers coach, and Korey Banks in charge of DBs. :roar:

DH

We could get some answers this week, according to Rick Dhaliwal.
Rick Dhaliwal‏
@DhaliwalSports

#BCLions owner David Braley is in Vancouver meeting with coach and gm Wally Buono and the rest of this staff today. This is the week we could get answers about Buono's future.

Just read that. I think a decision is needed sooner than later. They need to sell tickets, sign free agents and make a list of candidates if there is a new coach. Though Mark W is rumoured to be a strong candidate. I heard David Pratt suggest it could be Khari Jones. As for the latter, I sure hope not.

You can likely scratch Paul LaPolice from the Lions’ coaching wish list. Mike O’Shea says LaPolice will remain In Winnipeg as OC next year. The Bombers obviously want to head off speculation but that doesn’t necessarily mean they would deny another team’s request to speak to him about a head coaching opportunity.

If all the coaches are at the meeting today, does that mean they all are coming back? If any of them are to be fired, it would be in an one on one meeting with Wally, not a group meeting. It just makes me wonder why Braley meeting with them all instead of just Wally. Unless some retire or resign to look elsewhere, they may be all back again, which would be a disaster for you cannot sell the same old crew again.

Thursday is apparently the last day that teams can make announcements before the Grey Cup blackout, so an announcement about Wally’s status could come soon.
