Congratulations to Solomon Elimimian, Shaq Johnson, Cody Husband and Ty Long for being selected as the Lions' nominees for the 2017 Shaw CFL Awards. I can't argue with any of the selections. Solly and Long have had outstanding seasons, despite the team's disappointing record, and should have a chance to advance in the next round of voting. Husband's recognition is overdue. I thought he should have been an all-star last year. He has been a rock in the middle of an ever-changing offensive line.

    2017 CFL TEAM AWARDS ANNOUNCED

Wednesday, November 1, 2017 — TORONTO (November 1, 2017) — The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today the team winners for the 2017 Shaw CFL Awards.

The award recipients were selected by voting members of the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and CFL head coaches.

In this first ballot, FRC representatives from each CFL city as well as the respective head coach submitted votes for six categories. Voters were asked to select players from their local CFL club who, through the excellence of their on-field performances, best represent the awards’ titles – Most Outstanding Player, Most Outstanding Canadian Player, Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Most Outstanding Rookie, and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.

The East and West Division winners for the 2017 Shaw CFL Awards will be announced on Thursday, November 9.

The 2017 Shaw CFL Awards will take place on Thursday, November 23 in Ottawa, Ontario at the Shaw Centre. To purchase tickets to the Shaw CFL Awards and Rev-Up Party please visit www.greycupfestival105.ca.

Below are the first ballot results:

    *Indicates a unanimous selection
I'm curious if the "unanimous selection" picks by the HC and FRC translate into final winners. Not asking anyone to go back lol...

    Unanimous Selections:

Sol E and Alex Singleton - For the DEF player but not for their MOP selections. It likely will be down to either of these dudes in my view.

Andrew Harris and Henoc Muamba for the O/Canadian.

    Ricky Ray MOP

    Brendon Labatte - OL

ST Sergio Castillo & Roy Finch - but how many games has he missed?

Agree with all the Lions award nominees except for Cody Husband. To me, there is no question that Hunter Steward has been our best offensive lineman this season. Steward was also mentioned in the last TSN telecast of our Leos as our best offensive lineman this season.

A the same time, its good to see Cody Husband recognized for his efforts. He was an undrafted offensive lineman who really developed under Malone.

Sol E., Shaq Johnson, and Ty Long are excellent choices. Long has had an exceptional season for a rookie.

I like Steward and Husband. I wonder if Husband’s former high school coach, Farhan Lalji, voted for him.

I don't have a problem with any of the finalists except defensive player. Singleton got a lot of buzz this year from TSN commentators, mostly because of his national status, which should not be a consideration in this category.

Singleton led the CFL's best defence, while B.C.'s defence was in the middle of the pack. That is a valid consideration for the award. This is an individual award, though, and Elimimian's overall stats, and his importance to the B.C. defence, were greater than Singleton's, although Singleton had better numbers in several categories. Here are their comparative stats (with the leaders in each category in colour):

    Elimimian:
    144 tackles (CFL record)
    6 special teams tackles
    1 sack
    5 QB pressures
    0 forced fumbles
    0 interceptons
    2 knockdowns
    1 fumble recovery
    6 tackles for loss
165 total defensive plays (1st overall)

    Singleton:
    123 tackles
    2 special teams tackles
    4 sacks
    12 QB pressures
    1 forced fumble
    1 interception
    4 knockdowns
    0 fumble recoveries
    4 tackles for loss
151 total defensive plays (2nd overall)

As outstanding as Sol E. is and has been throught his career, I believe Singleton was the best defensive player in the CFL this season. He has incredible instincts and his range is incredible.

I'm pleased that Mike Reilly won the MOP Award althought Andrew Harris would have also been a deserving recipient. He had a very outstanding season in Winnipeg.

Its still hard to believe that Jason Maas took the football out of the hands of the CFL's MOP this season with his ill-advised field goal decision in the last two minutes of the WDF. This following comment might create a little excitement - Buono did the same thing and worse by taking the football out of the hands of the CFL's MOP in 2004 for the entire Grey Cup game.

With the announcement of the recipients of the Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award, Tom Pate Memorial Award, and Commissioner’s Award given to non-Lions, then the Lions have been completely shut out all the individual awards this season.

With Andrew Harris winning the Most Outstanding Canadian award, then the Lions losing him to Winnipeg would indicate that it was a mistake.

naah, Jeremiah achieved slightly higher average per carry. More exciting to watch
Harris targeted twice as much as Jeremiah. Jeremiah more yards per reception.
