No one was telling him not to make the tackle, just hold him up a second. Less than a second really. It was bad judgment and it resulted in points that made a difference in the end. The real point however is that play is just a symptom. Bad judgments by players are often signs of bigger issues at the coaching level. Players don't seem to be thinking bigger picture, can't see past the play immediately in front of them. Players need to have that awareness and coaches need to remind them about larger aspects of the game. So when you have a player that takes a needless penalty after the play is over, when you have players that step out of bounds when you should be running out the clock or running 2nd down plays that bring them up 1 yard short of the required yardage, that ultimately falls on the coaching. You can't make players smart but you can pick smart players. This team does not appear to be playing smart, the coaches do not seem to be playing smart and the HC and GM seems to myopic to know the difference.

Unbelievable stupid play calling. They had a first down deep in the red zone. Instead of running it in, the Lions called for 2 long passes in the end zone which felled incomplete.
Wally said after the game that Jennings had a run/pass option. Jennings said he read blitz and cover zero and opted to pass, thinking his receivers would be able to get open. Both times he rushed his passes and threw off target. With Jennings' fragile confidence, that's a situation where they should have simplified the game for him and called simple handoffs to Johnson up the A-gap. He was running the ball well and the O-line was opening big holes.
Agree that would have been the smart play. Problem is the guy calling the play is not the smartest guy in the stadium.

Come on Whitecaps. You are crazy. Your fans might get a little chilly. At least one BC Place Stadium tenant is making proper use of taxpayers' money.

Good point Sir Purrcival, "You can't make players smart but you can pick smart players. This team does not appear to be playing smart, the coaches do not seem to be playing smart."

The evening started out with the roof closed on a clear night and went down hill from there.

A metaphor for the two organizations really. One is open. Sees the bigger picture. Fan friendly. Willing to try new things, and sign new players to try and get better. More innovative (pushing 12% off season tickets for next year).

The other is closed. Set in their ways. Thinks small. Does not look at the big picture ("this game" is the most important so "noise" matters most). Relies on players they've got. Too mired in traditional ways (although kudos for teaming with Telus on the new app).

How significant was giving up that fg at the end of the first half
How's fricken hard is it to figure out to not tackle a player to let the clock run out? That's coaching awareness. That's what the Lions lack, smart coaches. Jones and Washington are horrible. Perhaps when Wally goes we can get some coaches that are hired for their football acumen and not their religious affiliation.
You can't tell a player not to make a tackle. The clock did run out. The ref immediately asked that they add a second to the clock after the play. I'm not sure why. It's hard to run that play in the six seconds that was on the clock.

It was a huge play, not only because of the closeness of the game but because it gave the Ticats a huge confidence boost heading into halftime.
Actually there have been other games this season with other teams where they were holding the ball carrier up (looked to be coached) and IIRC a situation or two where it almost backfired as the guy escaped. Same with going for the punch out of the ball.

It's coachable at the pro level where the time keeping is so precise and public including making sure situationally it's not where the player can escape for a TD.

I'd put this into the TRICK/GADGET PLAY category that Wally is not a believer in as in the old days they were more used by the bad teams. BUT those days are gone now with technology that makes superior execution of a play trumped by trickery from opponents.

If you want your team to be heads up thinkers, you need to inject new wrinkles into the play book and the schemes.

The CFL is just too small to be status quo and not be changing things up constantly as the Ticats did on Offence the other night.

The personnel shift around a lot too. As one defensive coach in the CFL has said (to his sister who said this to me this summer), 'the CFL is just too small to make enemies' as 'you never know who you might need to work with in future' or 'get a job from.'

BTW BC Fan, thanks for the stats on the Ty Long kick returns! Brilliant analysis as usual.
