Greetings football fansl,

Long time CFL fan looking for a venue to respectfully engage and discuss most things CFL. Chose Lionbackers over the Argofans forum.

If I was to say still miffed about that time Joe Fourqurean tipped the ball could anyone tell me what team I am a fan of.

Sad to see when I went to check the spelling that Joe is no longer with us.

Looking forward to giving an opinion now and again and sharing with what seems like a good group.

Tough break with the Lulay injury last weekend. More rehab but not done is how I see it.

Welcome don corleone! That would make you a Bombers fan (but we won't hold that against you). :roar:

Long time Lions fans still have that play etched in their memories. I believe a few posters were at the game too. It was the 1977 Western Semi-Final played in a downpour at Empire Stadium. Late in the 4th quarter in a tight ball game, Dieter Brock found Mike Holmes deep on a go route....but out of nowhere Joe jumped what seemed like 10 feet in the air to tip what would have been a sure touchdown as the stadium erupted in cheers. It goes down as one of the Top 10 plays ever for most of us.

Footage used to exist on the BC Lions website, but it's not to be found anywhere. Legend has it that Joe Fourqurean was concussed on the game's very first play and later couldn't even recall the play!

Yes, that Joe Fourqurean tip was one of many memorable plays in Lions-Bombers history. The two teams had one of the CFL's best rivalries in the 1980s.

I'm still miffed about Mike Gray's tipped-ball interception that clinched the 1988 Grey Cup for the Bombers. I loved Gray the first time I saw him in a B.C. uniform before he ever got to the Bombers. That Grey Cup game is on YouTube and I have an old VCR copy somewhere but I've never watched it. That was the one that got away.

Welcome don Corleone.

Your Bombers are doing very well after a slow start and it looks like they should push Edmonton for second place. Good luck, as it is a tough road with a below average QB to pull off. Like your creative coaching though, a difference maker for some games.

I've got the game on tape also. Like you I never watched the game again. Speaking of being miffed, I'm still miffed at old Chapdelaine dropping that pass from Roy Dewalt in the first Grey Cup held at BC Place.

I was at both games and vividly remember the elation of the former and heartbreak of the latter. In both cases the intended receiver was wide open for a TD.

I figured I was in with a tough crowd but that was pretty good stuff . One play 40 years ago and everyone remembers like yesterday. As do I.

To call Fourqueans play a groaner would be an massive understatement for any Bomber fan.

Mike Gray's touchtown was a happier time.

Anyway... seems the Lions are pretty intent on doing things the hard way again this year. Looking very good at times and lost at others. Tough to drop the two games to Edm early when EE was somewhat healthy.

Anyone else think the Lions were a better team with Anthony Allen?

Bombers and O Shea have the luck of the Irish on their side. Lapo is the guy who has made the difference. With all the Wally stepping aside talk I am surprised BC would not be looking at him. Probably the highest paid coordinater in the league but pretty sure there was talk of an out clause in the contract for HC opportunities.

Not saying there is an issue with the lions but I could see Lapo compliment the BC lineup in a big way. Hamilton is another spot he could help but who knows what goes on there. Can't see June Jones staying long.

Another guy is Ed Hervey. Would think him and Geroy would have something in common both being star receivers of their day.

Thanks for the welcome guys and good luck with your season.

Lapo's name has been mentioned prominently here for previous Lions' coaching vacancies. If I recall correctly, family considerations were a factor in his wanting to stay in Winnipeg. With O'Shea seemingly entrenched as Bomber HC, I'd love to see the Lions consider Lapo as a successor to Wally as head coach. It would be best if there's new ownership in place to make those decisions.

I liked Anthony Allen, don, but he is not missed. Many of us feel we have one of the premier running backs in the league in Jeremiah Johnson, who platooned with Allen last year to keep him fresh. Chris Rainey is getting some touches this year (I am worried however, if Johnson goes down with injury - no International RBs on the roster to take his spot).

To me, BC's issues are simple. They are very strong across the board with the exception of their line play. The only thing preventing them from being in the top third of the league is weak pass protection and a weak pass rush. Period.

Have they been a disaster this season? For the most part, no. Just not strong enough IMHO to put the Lions in the same discussion as the Stamps, Bombers, and perhaps the Esks. The biggest difference between the Riders' play at the start of the season and now is the improvement in their O-line play.

Welcome, don corleone.

Yes, lots to like about the Bombers.

O'Shea as Head Coach.

Andrew Harris.

Buck Pierce.

Nichols is getting it done.

LaPolice.

The team plays tough, like their Head Coach. I like his creative touches.

Yes, it is indeed on YouTube and posted by me a few times:

And my response to the Chapdelaine dropped pass will be the same response that I posted extensively on this topic: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27169
In that Argonauts defensive back Darrell Wilson really covered Chapdelaine very well and made an outstanding defensive play by punching out the ball before Chapedelaine had time to fully control the ball. If Chapdelaine was wide open, there will be a stronger case against him. But the fact that was not wide open by any means and Darrell Wilson made a superb defensive play, then Chapedelaine should not be the scapegoat. That could have happened to any Lions receiver with the defensive play performed by Wilson.

Yes, I've also posted the 1988 Grey Cup before:

As far as the final sentence, I don't think it's fully accurate to say that Jan Carinci was wide open. He was running a route and there were defenders in his vicinity. Who was actually open was season MOP David Williams as his covered cornerback James Jefferson fell on the play, but too bad Matt Dunigan did not see that even though he had a fair amount of time on that fateful play.

And the interception by Mike Gray, as costly as it was, didn't immediately clinch the Grey Cup for the Blue Bombers. The Lions defence forced Winnipeg to have a two and out, and the Blue Bombers conceded a safety to make it 22-21. The Lions still had a chance to at least get the ball to field goal range, but unfortunately had a three and out.

For any consolation for Lions fans, the Lions finally avenged that loss exactly 23 years later from November 27, 1988 to November 27, 2011.
