A change this season, that has almost slipped under the radar is, quietly, the CFL took steps to improve the communication between play-caller and quarterback this off-season.

The CFL no longer cuts off radio to the quarterback with 10 seconds remaining on the play clock.

This season, a CFL quarterbacks can walk to the line of scrimmage, with a coach's voice in their ear, to help identify coverages, blitzers, open receivers, through the snap of the football.

The quarterback headset is live while the play is being executed.

Has it made a difference. Hard to say. Passing yards are also up 21%, from a combined 533 per game one year ago to 643 yards through the air this season. The average QB rating is also a lofty 104.1 through four weeks, compared to just 92.3 last season. But that is a small body of games to assess whether its making a difference or not.

Its an interesting change and not one that has been publicized. It was also implemented quietly, just before the start of the season.
"When I went to Catholic high school in Philadelphia, we just had one coach for football and basketball. He took all of us who turned out and had us run through a forest. The ones who ran into the trees were on the football team". (George Raveling)

Wow, I am not sure I like that change. I'd say it almost sounds like 'cheating,' except both quarterbacks can take advantage of the extra set of eyes to survey the field. It's a clear advantage to offenses, although reading Kirk Penton's excellent weekly read from anonymous CFL coaches (Postmedia), they're grumbling about the lack of quality CDN content along the O-lines in the CFL, which they think are contributing to all the quarterbacking injuries. They say there's simply not enough talent to go 'round with the current ratio (and 9 teams) and claim more and more talented National O-linemen are finding work in the NFL.

how long until we have HUDs in helmets (think the opening of the filmed-in-Cloverdale Schwarzenegger movie The 6th Day)

BLM talked about this earlier in the season. No difference vs last season is how they are using it, although you could, but your too busy playing to really use this functionality.
