From LU:
So the Lions will put Bryant Turner, Geraldo Boldewijn, Zach Minter and Anthony Allen on their injured list later this week, and could have done the same with their two Canadians, but chose otherwise and thus defined the value in their eyes between them and more experienced talent.

“We’re going to have 51 or 52 under salary and that’s probably over budget,” Buono said. Free market economics played out differently for two more examples of a draft process that doesn’t work, and the Lions aren’t blaming a division rival for losing players they say they didn’t want.

I was won of the first in line that wanted to GUT GOPHER wen I first heard about this. But after a little thought it came to me Jaz and Maxx won there jobs, they showed more in camp and 2 exibitain games than Esse and Guy did. Two and this will be way over the head of the Gopher sniffers, You don't see our coach and gm
trolling for scraps.

We will see about Dillon Guy's knee. It would seem he has a high level of potential, if his knee allows it. It did not take the Riders long to snap him up.

IMO Maxx Forde was ahead of Ese from the get go, and on through the rookie season.

It seems evident that Wally wanted to keep the two guys, but they turned down the PR offer. If Guy turns into an effective starter for someone, justifying his at times very high rating, then perhaps we missed a chance to stash him away, one way or another.

We did well getting Vaillancourt. And it would be a huge bonus if Boyko falls our way.

With Fabien, Dhillon and O'Neill we have decent Nat depth on the OL.

Just IMO ...

Ese seems like a decent guy. He certainly didn't deserve the scrutiny he received - it wasn't his fault he was taken #5 overall. Maybe now is not the time to get self-righteous, but this was not a popular pick on this site. Many here were confused at the time of the selection and made their feelings known that he likely would have still been on the board in round 3, perhaps even round 4. Again, not to be smug, but it should be pointed out that the collective "we" on this fan site gets things right far more often than we get things wrong.

We knew Ese would be a project but red flags went up when he didn't even stand out on Special Teams. Best of luck to him, I do hope he carves out a CFL career. He's young and athletic; he certainly could develop, but was he a wasted #1 pick? Let's just say that I am very happy that Geroy is now in charge of the draft.

From Mike Beamish, excerpts ...
While the optics don’t look good — losing a first-rounder and another player (Guy) who might have been a first-round pick, had his stock not fallen because of knee surgery — the Lions are trying to put a positive spin on a p.r. misstep. It appears they’ve accumulated so much depth and player talent that it’s difficult to stash and keep them all. Saskatchewan, which wants what B.C. has, must assign both former Lions to the active roster with full pay for Week 1.
Rated three spots ahead of Charles Vaillancourt, the Lions’ rookie starting right guard, in the initial rankings released by the CFL Scouting Bureau last September, Guy’s final college season at Buffalo was wiped out because of surgery to repair a Grade 3 MCL tear and a torn ACL. The Hamilton, Ont., native was the 30th pick in the 2016 draft, a point where teams are beginning to throw the dice and hope for the best.
“We worked with him, we gave him time off,” Buono said of Guy. “In fairness, he sucked it up and was tough. Unfortunately, it (his knee) is going to be an issue for a while. I can understand why there might be some physical limitations.”
We will see how his knee holds out in Regina. It would be annoying if Regina puts him on an injured list.

This development certainly will lead to me taking a more cautious approach to next year's draft. The coverage has never been better which is fantastic but at the same time it can lead to players being overhyped to some extent.
Would have loved this kind of coverage back in 2000 when Brent Johnson somehow slipped to the 3rd round despite being on the roster at The Ohio State University. Only became one of the greatest Lions and CFL nationals of all-time.

Bottom line is each team only needs to develop 8 national starters and has so many other roster spots. There is plenty of room for mistakes in drafts. Ironically Jas Dhillon was taken 21st overall 2014 draft (9 slots higher than Guy) by the Argos and was offered a practice roster for the spot for the 2nd straight year and declined. Was back home in Surrey when Lions signed him last October and eventually beats out Guy for a roster spot.
Not exactly glorified route to making his hometown team but the Lions still end up with a solid prospect who was a former CIS FIrst Team All Canadian.

The Lions have picked up former SFU O-lineman Quinn Horton for the 10th and final spot on the practice roster. He was a final cut of the Stampeders on Sunday. He'll wear T-Dre Player's old No. 68.

Is he the guy that played on the D line at SFU and the Stamps tried him out at O line in TC?
If so, why? And where will the Lions have him practice/back up O or D or both?

This is good pick-up for depth. Played locally at SFU so he's familiar with the area (perhaps recommended by Kelly Bates?). One of the last cuts for the Stamps (they have a very deep O-line).

Horton will be on the Lions' PR on the O-line.

Are you perhaps thinking Quinn Smith? He's a DT who has done some time on the OL . The guy was a top rated prospect who's stock dropped due a steroid controversy . Teams avoided picking him in the first round due to the bad optics until Hufnagel got his shot and picked him anyway .

I was just looking at Quinn Horton's write-up on the Lions roster page and it does look like he also has defensive stats , so maybe both Quinns are two way players.

Neither Guy nor Ese have shown up on the Rider roster list or on the CFL transactions list as of yet. Perhaps just a matter of time as the Riders start off the season with a bye, but curious that confirmation of their status is still up in the air.

They're gone. So long. I'm giving them not another thought.
