Beck getting hurt may turn out to be one of the best things to ever happen to the BC Lions.
I totally agree with this Balize City...excellent post!!

I said, from the time that Beck was moved into the #2 spot, what the heck were our Leos thinking going with a 34 year old back up with little CFL experience when we needed to develop the 'next one'.

With a lot of the things we have learned at the end of this season, in terms of Wally's over-involvment, from Wally coaching assistant coaches at practices, to Tedford's comments at the end of the season, I wonder if Wally put the pressure on to have Beck as the backup. Certainly we had the same scenario last year with Benevedes as well.

Like you, I believed that Jennings deserved more opportunities earlier this season. Jennings play in pre-season at least should have been enough to get the #2 slot at quarterback. Beck did nothing to earn that spot and it was just handed to him.

While you and I don't seem to see things the same way, when it comes to Tedford and Buono, I certainly concur that it really would have been a shame for Jennings to never have gotten the opportunity to play this season.

Even though Jennings had sat out a year and it seemed that there were more qualified candidates when Tedford had 9 quarterback prospects competing for a chance to come to training camp, Tedford obviously saw something in Jennings and we are very fortunate for his analysis.

We had gone for quite a couple of seasons shuffling prospective quarterbacks on and off the roster or bringing quarterbacks in for 'look sees' with not very much luck. Now it appears that we have a quarterback that has the tools and talents to potentially take us to the 'promised land'.

There is nothing like hope and optimism at that key position.
If it can be said that Beck's injury may have been the best thing to happen could it not also be said that Lulay's injury may have been the 2nd best thing to happen? Without Travis going down Beck wouldn't have gotten the call. Where would BC's QB situation be today had Lulay stayed healthy, Beck and Jennings stayed on the sidelines and we wound up maybe 9-9? My feeling regarding Beck was that he was there to be a veteran presence to help bridge the gap between Lulay and the next one should Lulay go down. Had Lulay gone down in Week 1 would Jennings have been as ready as he was in Week 13? Beck's injury may have been fortuitous for Jennings but I think it was only a matter of time, perhaps a very short time, before he got a shot even if Beck was healthy.
You're as old as you've ever been and as young as you're ever going to be.

Beck was terrible, but no worse than Lulay. In my opinion, there is no chance that the team would have finished 9-9 or made the playoffs under Lulay. I do think that having Jennings on the sidelines helped his longer term development, and agree that he would have been the starting qb by the end of the year regardless of injuries to the other qbs.

I am a big fan of Lulay and hope he returns next year. However, given the frequency of qb injuries in the league over the last few years, we need a better option in case Jennings goes down. A backup has to be able step in and lead a team in to the playoffs if need be. Lulay is no longer capable of this, and I have doubts that McGhee is either.

...but when Wally is going to be the Head Coach, he is not so willing to let our top receiver walk away and signed Manny to a significant raise.

A different perspective for Wally in signing a top receiver when Wally is the one on the sidelines.

Wally said, after signing Arsenault to the new two year extension:
“We’v been talking about this for a couple of months. I’m happy for myself. I’m happy for our fans. They deserve this.”
'

Lions fans should have been 'deserving' of Moore and Jackson being extended in the past.

However, with Wally back as HC, Leo fans have suddenly become 'deserving' again.

I'm happy about that, just not happy that it didn't happen sooner.

Been a fan of Manny since his first TC here.

Big. Very strong for a wideout or slot. Plenty fast enough.

So he ran his mouth a bit with twitter. Guys are really just learning the dangers of social nedia. He strikes me as a very good citizen and teammate.

Good signing.

Same with Fabien.
You talk about the dangers of twitter and the media like they just came into existence yesterday. Arsenault is hardly a wet behind the ears 19 year old. What is he now? 28. No, he doesn't get off that easy for having been stupid. He may be a good guy but he should own completely his missteps and learn when to keep his thoughts to himself. That holds true of any time period even before the advent of the electronic media era. If you stay classy, you don't get into trouble.

Not going to bat it around too much here, Sir P.

No one condones Manny's big talk. But he is miles and miles from a locker room problem, IMO.

With twitter, bulletin board material has risen dramatically in its effect. It's a learning process. Manny is extroverted.

Would I prefer he keep it zipped, when he feels like dissing the opposition? Yes, of course. Coaches shake their head at anything that motivates the other team.

Owning up? That is another issue, for sure, in the maturation or evolution process.
.............

I was pleased to see Jon Cornish modify his behaviour, although some can probably mention incidents I have forgotten or that I missed. The low riding pants and mooning was way, way beyond what is acceptable. It seems to me he modified, but never really owned up. Progress? Yeah, some ...

I found his earlier behaviour very objectionable, but towards the end of his career, I liked how he came across in the public eye.

And you're not wrong in pointing out the perils of times but there is a saying that "loose lips, sink ships". Despite the obvious wartime references this long ago became synonymous with the idea that one is best exercising a little bit of restraint when it comes to engaging the mouth muscle or today's modern equivalent, the typing fingers. He's not the first, he won't be the last but one does have to be responsible for what they say, type, or otherwise embrace. Twitter is now a decade old, Facebook is older still. At some point, it stops being about the newness of medium and becomes more about the personality of the individual. If Manny is one of those "shoot from the hip" types, then that is who he is. He will, like all of those who tend to speak their minds, have to tread more carefully. Those that don't are Donald Trump and consistently finding themselves at the wrong end of public disdain.

I don't suggest he is a problem but he does seem to have taken a bit longer than some to figure out how to best conduct himself. He is one of those who by virtue of his talents, could easily be a person of great stature on a team that is getting considerably younger. I don't think he has taken that step just yet. He may be getting there and I certainly am not one whose virtue's allow me to cast stones. I just hope that in future we see more of the leader and less of that guy who at points last season was not as top drawer as he could be.

Like you suggest, probably not much here to bat about.
