Harris' 'burning desire' impresses Tedford

From the first time he saw him on tape, Jeff Tedford said Andrew Harris was the type of running back who could be successful in any league on either side of the border.
When the B.C. Lions needed him the most, Harris offered a purrfect validation for the coach of the CFL team.

On a night when quarterback Travis Lulay needed a compass to find an open receiver through much of the game, Harris was one of the few players who sprung free when it mattered the most.

Harris ran by the best defence in the CFL and connected with Lulay on a 31-yard touchdown with 1:17 left, and thanks to a two-point conversion catch by Shawn Gore and a game-ending interception by Ronnie Yell, the 3-3 Lions had posted an improbable 26-23 win over the Edmonton Eskimos at B.C. Place.

It looked grim throughout the second half, as Lulay struggled to find anyone in a position to make a reception for the offence. But Harris capped another 175-yard all-purpose night with his game-winning catch.

“I love the way (Harris) works during the week,” Tedford said after his defence slammed the door on an Edmonton comeback. “He plays with a burning desire he can do many things for us catching the ball of the backfield.”

The passing play came about in part because of the Lions’ willingness to stay patient with the running game. Harris had 20 carries and 24 touches in a game in which he had well over one-half of the Lions’ 313 yards of offence.

Lulay threw two interceptions Thursday, making it six picks in three games, and the crowd of 20,316 began to grow impatient with the quarterback and underachieving offence.

However the Lions defence gave Lulay and his unit by continually slamming the door on Edmonton quarterback Matt Nichols and Esks running back Chad Simpson. Suddenly, a date with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats next week doesn’t look quite as difficult.

Been saying that for years. Any league. it is about physical talent. Instincts of a runner. Determination.

As noted in the Post Game Thread, it is my opinion that if he had gone to a big college, he would have made it into the big dance, the NFL.

The naysayers will not change their opinion, and that is fine. Harris has been running to prove them wrong all his life.

In any case, he is ours. And he is my favourite player for a few years now.

Harris had a great game and he is the ONLY bright spot on a team that even TSN suggested was him and Lulay as the main ones actually giving their all.

It just seems that Harris is the only player who shows heart and fight for the ball. Not sure what is going on with the rest of their REC corps.

I'm pleased to see Cortez stuck with the run game and kept giving it to Harris. The Esks had no answer for Harris so the Lions kept giving it to him.

One third of the way through the season the 2 front runners for MOP are both named Harris.

I love the way the Lions' Harris just seems to put this team on his back and carry, drag, squirm and explode his way to a win. He won't be denied and the rest of the team needs to step up their game to keep pace.
