Lions add veteran defensive back Eric Fraser
Tuesday, July 14th, 2015
BCLions.com Staff
The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that veteran Canadian defensive back Eric Fraser has signed with the team.
A homecoming of sorts for the BC native who attended college at Central Michigan, Fraser was a first-round CFL Draft selection of the Calgary Stampeders in 2010. Over four seasons with the Stamps, he appeared in 70 regular season games making 31 starts at the safety position recording 107 tackles and another 37 stops on special teams.
Following the 2013 season, Fraser was taken in the Ottawa REDBLACKS Expansion Draft and appeared in 17 regular season games last year recording 15 defensive tackles and adding another 12 on special teams.
Fraser joins his Lions teammates on the practice field later this morning as they prepare for a rematch with the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Friday night.

Anyone know how did the Lions acquire Fraser? Did the Lions trade for him, did Ottawa release him, was he plucked off the PR and will he start at Free Safety or will he be a special teams/backup DB?

Dunno, Dano. I suspect he was just released, and we picked him up.DanoT wrote:Anyone know how did the Lions acquire Fraser? Did the Lions trade for him, did Ottawa release him, was he plucked off the PR and will he start at Free Safety or will he be a special teams/backup DB?
Starter? I expect the staff is happy enough with Chris R. But Fraser could certainly step in at Safety, and maybe push for playing time.

He was released by Ottawa before camp started (after trying to convert him to receiver).
Not sure what plans the Leos have for him. My guess is the injury to Arakgi might be a little worse than first thought (i.e. a hamstring tear as opposed to a pull) and they plan to put Eric in his spot on Special Teams.

Released by Calgary and Ottawa before training camp and the Lions pick him up after game 2. Can't help but think this is a temporary move until Arakgi comes back from his injury.

Casey Chin is off the PR and transferred to the active. Fraser is listed on the PR. At least according to the CFL.

Likely a depth move that also provides some flexibility. Phillips is out. Sounds like Aragki is out. Lane was the only DB left on the PR. Fraser has been a decent special teams cover guy through his career. He can offer depth there as well as at safety which in turn allows them to shift Parker to another secondary position if something else happens injury-wise.
