This could backfire with the lions as the lions do not even have a good kick returner that we know of

Lions brought in a few pretenders, but will have to count on Antolin as it looks now to fill those vacancies. Funny how Logan and Brown were picked up by more solid teams than the Lions.

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe the Lions can sign whoever Als and Stamps release in order to make room for Logan and Brown. :bang:

I was very disappointed the Lions released Tim Brown. It was a classless move by the Lions to release the veteran so close to training camp. He was a terrific returner for the Lions, sure-handed, always gaining positive yardage even with close coverage. Brown was also the best RB on the team, too bad the Lions never gave him a chance to carry the load. He was the only RB on the team who could run effectively between the tackles. I hope he rips the Lions for 3 return Td's in their first game plus a couple more on the ground. The Stamps are also thrilled with Lions castoffs G. Love, J. Bell and Lin J. Shell. :rotf:

I realize he didn't go to Cal but what's Yonus Davis up to these days? :beauty:

Stefan Logan had 116 carries last season and rushed for 625 yards finishing 7th in the CFL, spending the majority of the season in the role of a returner and rotational back. He averaged 5.4 yards a carry behind an ineffective offensive line and playing in a bad offensive scheme. Andrew Harris rushed 122 times last season and averaged 5.3 yards per carry.

Logan finished 3rd in the CFL in combined yards.

Certainly Logan's performance didn't warrant his release. He is an older back now but he also had very few miles on his legs. However, I understood that we wanted to get younger at the rotational back position (kick returner, rotational tailback, punt returner).

Tim Brown had one of the best punt return averages in the CFL last season. He returned 44 punts for 502 yards, with an 11.4 average punt return. He also had a 75 yard return and a return for a touchdown.

At cfl.ca the comment was:
CFL.ca
Stampeders sign return specialist Tim Brown
CFL.ca CALGARY -- It didn't take long for Tim Brown to find a new home, as the Calgary Stampeders announced on Tuesday they've signed the running back and return specialist.

CFL.ca insider Justin Dunk was first on the scoop, tweeting the news earlier on Monday: Brown was arguably the CFL's top return man in 2014, logging 27.6 yards per kick return and 11.4 yards per punt return. In his career he's logged 2,404 punt return yards and 3,987 kick return yards to go with five total touchdowns.
He's also played a role offensively as a running back, rushing for 704 yards and six touchdhowns throughout four seasons and adding 198 yards through the air.
The 30-year-old played four seasons with the BC Lions from 2011 to 2014 but was released last month
Once again I thought it was worth looking to recruit a player who could unseat Brown.
But we released both Logan and Brown without ensuring that we had players that could replace them. Obviously Calgary also thought they had better options going into training camp than Brown or they would have signed him prior to.

The big question is why not keep these two successful vets and have them for training camp and then see if the new recruits can unseat them. It's called hedging your bets.

I think if we could get Shaq M-L going on the return team he might make people very sorry they kicked his way.

According to this, a vacancy for Brown was created as a result of Jock Sanders actions during Friday's game getting himself cut.

The dominoes are beginning to fall.

When the day began, the Calgary Stampeders, needing to get down to the CFL-mandated 65 players by Sunday night, had a host of options to sort through when it came to the kick-return game.

After a round of morning cuts did little to provide clarity, that all changed in the afternoon when veteran running back Jock Sanders, the team’s primary return-man from a year ago, was handed his walking papers.

Apparently, there was a little more to Sanders’ release than just his play on the field.

“Basically, something happened during the game, so I slept on it for a couple days and made the decision,” Stamps GM/head coach John Hufnagel said Sunday afternoon.

While Hufnagel would not elaborate, Sanders, according to multiple sources, had developed a reputation as a player who couldn’t always be counted on to answer the bell, and the “something” Hufnagel is referring to had to do with the NCAA West Virginia Mountaineers product deciding he didn’t want to be on the field at one point during Friday’s pre-season clash with the B.C. Lions at McMahon Stadium.

Derrick Joseph, a pint-sized Brandon Banks receiver/returner clone at 5-foot-8, 145 lb., was also released Sunday, leaving second-year man Sederrik Cunningham, star slotback Marquay McDaniel, veteran defensive back Joe Burnett, rookie Greg Wilson and Nathan Slaughter, who’s been in camp for less than a week, to handle kick-return duties during Sunday’s afternoon practice, the final gruelling two-a-day camp session.

Slaughter made the most of his opportunity Friday night against the Leos, catching one ball for six yards, adding an 18-yard punt return and a 22-yard kickoff return, the whole time showing off his big-time speed.

That earned him a longer look over Joseph.

“No. 1, (Slaughter) made some difficult catches, caught the ball in a crowd, and he had the longest return in the game,” Hufnagel said. “I’ve been pleased with him. He’s studious, and he picks up things very quickly. He’s definitely been a nice addition.”

Cunningham quietly finished fifth in the CFL in combined return yards last season with 1,125 yards, doing the majority of his work when Sanders was out of the lineup due to nagging leg injuries.

If the Stamps stick with the mix currently on the roster, Cunningham could be the lead dog in the return game.

“It’s one of those positions on a football field where you can find lightning in a bottle, so you’ve gotta make sure you’re sharp on everything,” Cunningham said. “Now, I’m like the incumbent, as far as the guy coming back from last year, and it’s a big responsibility being the sole starting returner, and I say starter with an asterisk because you never know what can happen in this business, man.”

You don’t need to explain that part of the business to Sanders, who was cut on his 27th birthday.

A prized off-season addition prior to the 2014 season, Sanders came over from the Saskatchewan Roughriders as a free-agent and was billed as a dynamic return-man and change-of-pace option at running back behind Jon Cornish and Matt Walter.

Early on last year, Sanders was exactly that.

But thanks to a litany of injuries in the backfield, Sanders was given more touches than he could handle and eventually broke down, failing to factor in much down the stretch. He did not play in the West Final or the Grey Cup.

Sanders, who missed six games, was one of just six CFL players with 1,000 combined return yards, while also chipping in with 161 rushing yards on 37 carries and 14 receptions for 135 yards and one TD.
