BREAKING NEWS! MAJOR SCANDAL....

The cheating, scheming, low life, unethical, morally bankrupt Ticats keep the CFL in the news with the news that they exceeded the $5 million salary cap by a whopping 0.17878% or $8939 dollars leading to a fine of an equal amount or what for an NFL or NHL team would call a rounding error.

Story says it was many injuries including high profile (paid) players as well as unforeseen 10 All - stars.
“We worked to our best ability to mitigate that to get under the SMS, but with the record number of injuries, coupled with the unknown SMS factor of all-star bonuses for our 10 all-stars, we ended up over the cap by less than $10,000.

“We look forward to a great 2015 season and once again working within the parameters of the SMS system.”

I know a cap is a cap but less than 1% should be a gimme...lol.

So I guess if you felt sorry for them for losing the Grey Cup over a penalty, no need to feel that way anymore.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Laugh all you want but to this day I do not count the 2007 Grey Cup "Championship"* credited to the Riders* because of their blatant, reckless, irresponsible and down right incompetence in exceeding the salary cap by $76,000. That Grey Cup is forever tainted, and will live in CFL infamy. It's the only reason the Lions, defenders of truth, justice, and proper salary cap management, did not win that year. It's true that good guys finish second some times and there is no greater example than 2007. Evil truly prevailed that year, but is vindicated by the ever present asterisk next to that championship year.

Sadly, the Riders utterly failed to learn their lesson, and ONCE AGAIN they violated the salary cap in 2013, further tarnishing the legacy of the Grey Cup championship. This time, they exceeded the salary cap by an astonishing $17,000. It's somewhat hilarious, but kind of fitting, that the only two championships the Riders have managed since 1989 have been rendered meaningless by their blatant disregard for sportsmanship and their total disrespect for the game. But alas, what more can we expect from a franchise that tried to steal another championship by playing a 13th man on a championship deciding play?

Not only that but the 2007 win came against a team whose QB was making his very first pro start, and even then, and with three gift INTs, they barely won it in a far-from-convincing fashion. There's something to be said for every championship being the culmination of a year's worth of hard work and dedication from the whole organisation and everyone pulling in the same direction blah blah blah. But this doesn't mean you can't rank all the winners in terms of quality of opponent defeated and level of domination over the opponent, and this exercise would put the 2007 Riders squarely at the bottom of any such list. The real debate would be about who comes next.

These stories on the SMS show transparency and it gets the CFL in the media if for for 15 minutes of notice. However given how small the dollars does this really help them or is more of a story to the casual sports fan to knock the CFL in the coffee rooms as the dollars are so small as it shows the CFL to be a minor league?
