The Lions wrapped up their second Free Agent Camp Sunday in Las Vegas, where head coach Jeff Tedford, GM Wally Buono and members of the club's football operations staff put their evaluation skills to test.

“We had some very skilled players come out today including some players from our negotiation list that did not disappoint,” reports VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “It was another good camp and it gives us some key information heading into a very critical part of the year.”

Close to 30 players took advantage of warm temperatures and a fast-track to try and earn a training camp invite from the club. The weather, which topped out at +25° was certainly an upgrade from Friday’s workout in Dallas where Buono, head coach Jeff Tedford and their staff were greeted by a snow-covered field and temperatures in the single digits.

“This has been a very fruitful weekend,” said Tedford, after attending his first two evaluation camps as head coach. “We have a vision of the kind of team we want to build heading into the season and these camps are critical to building depth and making sure every position on the field is ultimately filled by the very best player available.”

The club’s crew of coaches and scouts return home this evening and will venture out again later in the month as the CFL holds Regional Combines for Canadian draft-eligible players in Edmonton and Montreal ahead of the main CFL Combine in Toronto on March 28 and 29.

The club will also host three more free agent camps in Atlanta, Washington D.C. and Seattle in coming weeks.

Key here is the vision of the kind of team we want. Let's hope it's a CFL built team as Tedford has been out of the CFL for a long time. He has Cortez and other coaches with experience here so that will be a positive influence if he is a listener.

I do think there are a lot of players down south with the potential who might not get NFL scouts all fired up so these camps are a good thing. The issue is do they come to your camp and of course if they can adjust to the pro CFL game.

What's odd about this video is Wally's willingness to "name names" of those who impressed. He's normally far more circumspect.

I actually think it's a good strategy to keep the hype machine rolling heading into camp, although the only people for whom this kind of stuff means anything is hardcores like us.

That is impressive. GM and Lion's coaches naming names. Something in the video says these guys are high on the GM's radar. Very friendly.

One thing that is good when you have players from the west coast of the US in BC - they and their families are able to get back and forth cheaper especially just south of us.
