Assistant Coaching Staff Changes
Moderator: Team Captains
Someone cuts the film for coaches to review, helps coordinating the scouting of opponents and the self scouting that does, or at least should, go on during the season. It's actually a great place for a young coach or coaches to cut their teeth. In a way, it's like being the back office assistant to the coaching staff.Big Time wrote:Quinn Tedford being brought in as "offensive quality-control coach"? What exactly does that mean? Starting to think Tedford's two year deal was to try and groom his son to become an HC at some point.
In fact, I'd argue that most teams don't have a large enough Quality Control staff. It, like a Special Teams Coach, is a greatly under appreciated and under valued role.
Tedford is bringing his own crew in a total makeup of the coaching , just hope he brings in the right people , one other I like about Tedford is that he is not going to put up with Skulski hanging out on the sidelines during the games . Tedford is in control more than just coaching people.

Surprise. Kind of a head shaker.B.C.FAN wrote:Per Farhan Lalji on Twitter, Chuck McMann stays as special teams coach and takes over running backs from Kelly Bates.
STs have been underwhelming. Frequently caught by trick plays.
Does Tedford see something on the tape that he likes? Does a detailed look at film of our STs shed some positive light on Chuck McMann?
Of course Jeff Tedford appreciates how important STs are in CFL play. Hopefully this decision was made for the right reasons, based on a large dose of film study.
Just IMO ...

Can I ask where you heard/read this? Not that I don't trust you, but it's a real pet peeve of mine (Skulsky bigfooting everything when he should do his job) and I'd like to know where it was mentioned.dupsdell1 wrote: one other I like about Tedford is that he is not going to put up with Skulski hanging out on the sidelines during the games . I'm surprised. Hope the report is untrueB.C.FAN wrote:Per Farhan Lalji on Twitter, Chuck McMann stays as special teams coach and takes over running backs from Kelly Bates.
Sounds like Wally retained his old teamate Mcmann to save some money: Special teams and Running back coach/Draft cordinater etc....what did Tedford think when he watched the special team unit getting burned by trick plays?!?
The coach probably has to work within a budget for coach's salaries and decided to double-duty the ST & RB coach, perhaps saving some money to entice another top coach into the fold. Despite K. Bates being a good coach, his position may have become expendable, especially with the head coach being an offensive specialist and may even call the plays. Now all we need is a healthy QB...
Yea, maybe he hasn't made it up to Week 20 of film study when Calgary's Keon Raymond and Jock Sanders burned us for 30-yards per kick return that had the Stamps scrimmaging from, like, the 45-yard line each time.leo4life wrote:.....what did Tedford think when he watched the special team unit getting burned by trick plays?!?

Received following email from the Lions:
The BC Lions Football Club officially confirmed this afternoon that offensive line coach Dan Dorazio, defensive line coach Carl Hairston, running backs coach Kelly Bates and receivers coach Joe Paopao will not return to the team in 2015.
“My thanks go out to each of these men for their time and their dedication to our club,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “We wish them the very best in the future.”
The club will make a formal announcement regarding its 2015 coaching staff in coming days when all positions have been confirmed by head coach Jeff Tedford.
An announcement was also made this morning that veteran fullback Rolly Lumbala has signed a contract extension through the 2016 season. Lumbala appeared in all 18 regular season games last season for the Leos making it four consecutive years the Idaho grad has not missed a start. The seven-year vet was originally selected by the Lions in the second round of the 2008 CFL Draft (ninth overall) and has now logged 117 career games along with nine playoff appearances and a Grey Cup title in 2011.

It would have been appropriate and respectful, if Hairston was retiring, that the LIons announced it that way, rather than the statement that he was not retained.South Pender wrote:Wouldn't it be great if we could get Randy Melvin back!Dusty wrote:Coach Hairston may have been on a contract expiring 31 December 2014 unlike others that expired end of January 2015. I totally agree that it would be wonderful if we could get Randy Melvin back. You can sure bet that Melvin made a heck of a lot more money coaching at Tampa Bay in 2012 and 2013 that coaching with our Leos. He is at Florida International now. I don't anticipate him coming back to B;C. South Pender, as cool as that would be. Melvin has 7 years of NFL experience and a ton of college coaching experience on his resume.
It will be interesting to see who we hire as our defensive line coach. You can bet Tedford has a list. At least it looks like we've retained Johnny Holland for next season...he did the best job of all of our assistants last year.
