Here's something for you Jeff Tedford fans -

"In 2011 with the California state budget in meltdown - layoffs, education costs, $14 billion in short-term debt and $600 billion in unfunded liabilities - Cal head coach Jeff Tedford was the state's highest paid employee, with a 2.8 million salary. His salary dwarfed that of California's second highest-paid employee, Ronald Busuttil, who was merely chief transplant surgeon at UCLA Medical Center." (from Gregg Easterbrook, The King of Sports: Football's Impact on America)

Is Jeff Tedford the greatest thing since sliced bread to happen to the Lions? Will Tedford be more than a 1 year coach with the Lions? Will ambition and opportunity send him elsewhere, like back down south? Will he be truly dedicated and loyal to the BC Lions? How effective will he actually be as a CFL head coach? The answers are in the future unless you have a crystal ball.
"the 1996 season was a very difficult period... I couldn't imagine telling people that I was part of the last days of the CFL... it seemed that there would be no end to the continuous stream of catastrophic problems... it was like living in a toxic fishbowl... if they had known how serious the situation was, but we couldn't make it public, for fear of a total meltdown". (from Bigger Balls, The CFL and Overcoming the Canadian Inferiority Complex, by Jeff Giles)

In the USA, the highest paid public employee for the overwhelming majority of states is either the football or basketball coach of a public university in that state (usually its largest, I would think). If you have a problem with JT's UCB paycheque, the problem is not with JT, rather it would be much bigger than that.

http://deadspin.com/infographic-is-your ... -489635228

Also, not trying to defend it but my understanding from a copy of a JT contract someone posted here is that Nike or similar sports apparel company, for at least the duration of that particular contract (admittedly only a portion of his decade-plus UCB years), paid the bulk of his UCB salary through some sort of endorsement or similar agreement, with only a small fraction coming from state funds.

At any rate, his contract almost certainly has an out clause and is only for 2yrs duration anyway. Particularly after just watching JC bolt from SFU after not even a full 12 months, I don't think anyone here is, or should be under any illusion at this time that he's an absolute lock to still be here for the 2016 season, and it's probably even less likely he'll want to re-up for 2017 and beyond. And that's not even considering the possibility the Lions might decide to go in a different direction and make the choice for him. This team could still flop mightily for myriad reasons. Nothing is guaranteed from a fan's POV.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Something is wrong when I start seeing double on Lionbackers after too much turkey and wine..

Sports has been huge and skewed in terms on money for a long time in the U.S.A. when there are literally thousands of athletes and coaches who make more than the President of the U.S.A.

Or athletes can get away with murder, but that isn't restricted to the U.S.

Speaking of Mike Riley who coached the 1988 Blue Bombers to the upset Grey Cup win along with the blowout 1990 win and who won two CFL coach of the year awards....and along with all the sexual lawsuits going around with Bill Cosby right now and the Joe Paterno not too long ago.....it looks like Mike Riley is now faced with a huge lawsuit by a woman stemming from an alleged rape from one if his players in 1999 and for failing to correct a hostile and sexually violent culture.

And now, Mike Riley has just been fired as head coach at University of Nebraska with a 4-8 record.

And Jeff Tedford is an NCAA coach of the year candidate at 9-3 Fresno State, which defeated No. 25 Boise State today.

When a very experienced Head Coach and with a lot of knowledge regarding the CFL game announces, before the season begins, that he wants to go with a different offence using a tight end system, hires his own offensive coordinator, and recruits two big athletic tight ends for his system and........

then all season we run a spread offence, with those big athletic tight ends being used as recievers lined up in the outside slot position and the offence looks exactly like the same spread offence we have always used in the Buono era.....

it begs some really serious questions.

Jesus. Don't be bumping an old thread with a title like that at this time. I nearly had a coronary.

Grey Cup Tomorrow. After the game as early as Monday we may know. A press conference will be announced likely sometime next week and one sportswriter or more will dig for news and get the scoop. I expect the news to come by Thursday, just a gut feeling.

Decision likely already made. Just need to plan how to spin it and try to sell it to the fans and media. If it is all status quo, expect a backlash, from those who still care. Apathy about the team is at an all time high.
