Benevides trashing Phillips and then Marsh was bizarre as he used to be DC.

This is not done to vets like that. Korey Banks didn't allow dissension it seems. Nik Lewis on Stamps O seems to be the guy that doesn't allow that on their O and we all know Cornish has had to change some but even know in the heat of a game he makes statements that will grate guys on the O line like after some great runs - 'that is how you block'. I know that any self respecting O-Lineman would not say anything in a game to that but would not appreciate that statement as it makes it sound like he is saying all the other times they weren't doing it right. Cornish has grown but has he has to have a regulator for his mouth.
“Austin’s real good with making everybody feel comfortable,” said Ticats tailback Nic Grigsby, who was with the Lions at training camp in 2012 for their first season under deposed coach Mike Benevides. “He acts as if he’s one of us. Guys feed off that energy.”
Yes the coach has to see himself part of the team unlike many NHL coaches BUT with a different role. I mean by that a good HC feels and acts like he is accountable to his players as a group to deal with performance issues, bad play, undisciplined conduct. As a coach myself I had to balance giving guys from the bench time to play as you need a bench in sports to win but at the same time I always had to be concerned that I'd get the core of the team angry if I subbed when we were really under fire to win.

Austin is one of them but they all know he is focused on doing what needs to be done to win including changing QBs if for no other reason to give the D a different look, change of pace or feel to the O.

Where Wally was different is that he'd dump players before their best before date and while others said nothing it doesn't go down well. It seems Austin has done it only with a few like Burris but that was understandable as he had good young prospects and he knew he'd get Collaros in a heart beat as he couldn't see the end to Ricky Ray in Toronto and playing only when he's hurt for back up bucks was not his first choice.

Austin has built a unified team. Benny did not and I was shocked he'd trash long termers in the media.

As to a coach having control over personnel that is not as black and white as it seems. The coach must have the plan and a clear focus on his needs for the type of player and skills he needs and the GM has to get them but stick to his budget and SMS. GM must have the right to give guidance if he knows a player won't fit but the team on the field has to be the HC's. BUT he also has to listen to his boss if that is not good enough.

Lapo calling his own plays wasn't working but lapo forced to hire the OC of Mack's choosing was the wrong way to go. Lapo not listening to drop play calling is a HC doomed to fail.

Ullrich: Lions set to rebuild without some key vets

B.C. Lions are expected to announce Tuesday that veteran tackle Khalif Mitchell, right, will not be with the CFL team next season.

It’s about clearing the decks or, to use Wally Buono’s own words, burning the ship. Either way, the B.C. Lions are about to start the process of rebuilding the CFL team.

Once the general manager of the Lions begins a debriefing of his remaining coaches Tuesday morning, the club is expected to confirm at an afternoon news conference that at least four veteran players will not be asked to return next season.

Cornerback Dante Marsh already had a good idea he wouldn’t be back when he wasn’t given a form to sign with his final paycheque that would ensure the option year of his contract was being picked up.

Quarterback Kevin Glenn, who was unable to generate any offence in the scheme of co-ordinator Khari Jones relative to expectations, also knew he would not be offered a new contract after the East Division semifinal.

But the Lions are going further. They are also expected to confirm that tackle Khalif Mitchell and punter Ricky Schmitt won’t be back either.

Mitchell gave B.C. little in the way of a pass rush and had some players suggesting he was given preferential treatment.

Schmitt started well after signed as a free agent but tailed off badly and was ultimately replaced by Paul McCallum.

McCallum has worked out a 2015 deal and is expected to be back for his 23rd season kicking field goals with practice roster rookie import Richie Leone handling punts and kickoffs.

Mitchell’s departure will mean the Lions will allow rookie Rob Lohr to contest a spot next season. Marsh will be replaced by T.J. Lee, who had an increased role last year that enabled the 12-year cornerback to understand his time with the Lions had come to an inglorious end.

B.C. only has three other pending free agents, including safety J.R. LaRose, who wasn’t sure after the season whether he would be asked back. It means the Lions have no other way to commence a transition that must continue after they undoubtedly noticed how far they have slipped behind the teams playing for the Grey Cup at B.C. Place Stadium on Sunday.

That is how it seems. Calgary has been building since 2008. Hamilton will be in year 3 of the Austin regime.

We need a Head Coach. No obviously excellent and available ones out there. Garcia could be excellent, and might be excellent, but Wally has already spoken of Garcia in less than flattering terms.

We need a quarterback or two. Yes we have guys. Are they primed and ready? Do we know what we have there? A new staff might start from scratch, as happened when Wally came here.

We probably need an OC.

We might even need a new DC.

Will we get a new O Line coach?

Can we speak of 2015, and say that we expect to be challenging for the Grey Cup? That would lack a sense of reality, it seems to me. Challenge for the playoffs? Sure. If all goes well.

Day 1 of prepping for the next football year has come, and mostly gone. Day 2 is tomorrow.

Travis Lulay is expected to be at the news conference tomorrow. Going for another surgery ? Restructured contract ? Retirement ?
