Q1

B KJ to Manny for 4, EJ offside, 2 out, sloppy start

E Bailey drops a bomb, good cover by Phillips, might have got a hand in there, Reilly great scramble, late hit, 2 penalties already, FG 3-0.

B Antolin (KA) for 5. 2 out.

E Run for 2, offside, penalty #3, Solo tackle, 1st down, Reilly to Bowman, White tackle by Solo, PJ, Reilly TD. 10-0.

Surprise? Not really. I figured Jones would have his team ready. And there is always a chance that Benny will not have his team sharp.

Esks good running, blocking, passing on O, good defence against a pop gun offence.

B 2 out # 3.

Penalty on the punt cover on Arakgi. #3.

E Tip, Int by Solo.

B KA for 5, KJ for the 1st down, KJ to Gore, Rolly, FG 3-10.

E Nice hit by Yell, big hit by Biggie.

B Nice return by Iannuzzi, penalty #4 and 5. KJ scramble

10-3 Esk after Q1

Looks like we are trying to surpass last week's penalty total.
...........

Q2

B 2 out. Hit on KJ.

E Reilly to PJ, nice play action, run for six, White for big gainer, fumble, Lawrence close to first down, Solo tackle, third and rwo, White big run, ballsy call by Jones, Pat White TD.

17-3, Eskimos.

How long did it take for Jones to build an O Line?

How long have we struggled with O Line issues? Years. Despite high drafts all over the place.

Coaching mismatch so far.

Nice return by Marco.

B Got my wish in a sense, Pascal Lochard with a nice run. 6 yards. 2 out.

Can we rally? Will we get blown out?

E White big run, great blocking, great scheme, Reilly for 12, knock down by Lee.

B Were the Esks ready for EJ? Sack. 2 out. illegal punt.

Complete coaching mismatch.

E White for 7, short of first. Will Jones go for it? No. Delay of game. Jones ticked. LOL. 20-3.

B KA for 3, KA stuffed. 2 out. Illegal punt.

How many penalties so far?

Were we freaking ready to play?

Will we have any effective adjustments?

E White for 18. Reilly scramble. Penalty on BC. Keerist! Challenge it, Mike. Fight with that headset, Mike. White for 4. Lawrence kicking ass. Pathetic collapse. Fumble.

Huge, lucky break.

B 2 out. Marcel Young prepped for the challenge of EJ. No surprise.

Penalty on BC. Get in his face, Benny. Way too late.

E Reilly for nine. Solo tackle.

Half time score. Eskimos 20-3 over the dazed and confused Lions.

Solo has teeth.

B KA stuffed.
.........

Schultz saying how confident the Eskimos are. Milt saying Solo is the best player in the CFL.

Could have been 14 or 10 points worse.

139 passing, 129 rushing for the Esks.

Q3

E White for 6, 2 out. First this game.

B 16 yards passing for us. Great cover on EJ. EJ run for first. KA for 3, sack. Great coverage. Great defensive scheme. Poor offensive scheme.

No yards penalty on us. This is rather horrible. It is as if our guys know we do not have the coaching expertise.

E MR to Bowman. Bighill nicked. MR run. Solo has the record. White stopped. But first down. MR TD. 27-3.

Horrible mismatch at the coaching level. Not at the player level.

Wally and Benny were just dreaming. Dreaming that an underqualified, not outstanding DC in his brief time time there, could be an effective HC against the sharp guys out there.

B KJ to KA, first down. Good for Kito. Rolly for eight. KA stuffed. Third and three, Rolly good play. Kito should have had it. Fumble. Esks ball.

E 14 yards. Huge play to Bowman. White great run. We dodged a bullet, and give up the FG. 30-3.

Does Chris Jones give his team confidence? Does Benny do that for his? First year HC versus HC in his third. The difference? One has an outstanding resume as a DC.

B KA for 7, Lochard tough run. Beck at QB. Beck for the first. EJ drop.

End of Q3. 30-3, Eskimos. I guess one could call that a blowout. But our players do have pride.
...........

Fourth quarter blog coming, but this game is long over ...

Well, it looks like the warts that have been obvious all season, but covered up the last three weeks, were laid bare for all to see. From Glenn playing on a "wing and a prayer" basis to Parks consistently being beat, it was a complete washout.... Sure, Soli got his mark, but I'd have been happier if the O had risen to the occasion, instead of laying a big fat fart!

Suitor says Esks defence is an aggressive defence, a take away defence. Jones mixes things up.

Q4

B 2 out.

E White for 7. Penalty on BC. Penalties are on the HC, IMO. It is about attitude, focus, confidence, respect. MR rolls his ankle. Get him out of there. Stamps huge play. Breakdown on D. White huge play. TD. 37-3.

Embarrassing ineptitude by our coaching staff.

B Beck to Poblah. Very nice.

Jones has Willis spying. Mix it up. Buy in of the players with Chris Jones. Benny not so much, it seems to me. And that is the deal with a Head Coach. Getting the players to buy in. Giving them confidence. Did even the fans have confidence in Benny? They had hopes for sure. But huge doubts.

E Big run. Pat White big run. McCarty again.

The Lions gave up a long time ago. Not physically, but emotionally. No spark.

Practice fast. Play fast, For Chris Jones.

I would have to say that this game was an indictment of our coaching staff.

Could we rally? Sure. But then we get to play against top level coaching once again.

2:28 left. Back dowm to earth for the Lions, says Suitor.

Is Benny ticked? Who cares? His players have no fear. All that tough talk about barf bags at practice. Just blather. Just baloney.

E White huge run. First down. Solo still playing with pride.

Disgusting exhibition overall.

Good on you WCJ for continuing with the Lions tonight, that is just too much punishment for me to look at.

Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

Thanks, Rammer. I usually just keep on going.

And besides, I pretty much divorced myself from win/loss results over the course of the last few years.

One team came to play. Jones does not talk tough. He does not try to do high fives or chest bumps with his players. But he has their respect. He has their "buy in." And it was interesting to watch.

Emotionally, now, I do need to see the comments of Blitz and MexicoLionFan. When they are ready.

And all of our excellent bloggers. We need to let it all out. Let 'er rip.

10 completions all night is inexcusable. Edmonton had over 500 yards total offence.

Lowell Ulrich has provided a summary of this game in the online Province, much, much better than I could do, but his words echo my thoughts exactly. I wish I could embed the link, but its a must read. He uses the word "pathetic"..... correctly, and in the right context.

I was expecting an effort like this but I was expecting NEXT week after a solid ROAD win by the Lions. IOW, the Lions do what it takes to set the table for the home playoff game, beat the Esks by eight (or MORE) and then lay an egg versus the Stampeders thereby trashing their chance for a home playoff game.......

Instead, got to see that struggle today. Whats the problem? Unsure. It just gets tough to watch. Glenn struggles to find an open reciever on 2nd down and he gets hit, either taking a sack or ball goes for an incomplete pass :dizzy: Its like every series is a 'GROUNDHOG DAY' moment where you almost KNOW FOR A FACT how the Lions offence is going to fail.....
_______________
Scary part is the offence was DID NOT have its worst first half. At least it didn't seem it. That was a game last season, IIRC, (Montreal?) when Lulay was our starter. IMO, this first half wasn't as bad as that one but close nonetheless....
________________
What worries me is the defence. One thing I could always look forward to was a solid effort and showing from the BC Lions defence. They may have made the effort but their showing was :puke: The Esks runners (QB's and RB's) both seemed to have that smashmouth attitude, where they were the ones laying the licks. IT WOULD BE REALLY nice to see an BC O-line being given the opportunity to lack some smashsmouth runblocks the way the Esks seemed to dominate.
________________
Well, IMO, its clear the Esks are the clear #2 team in the CFL. The Stamps are obviously #1 but that means a healthy Cornish, so there is some hope for the West in the playoffs. As for the East, not too sure how its going to come about. Right down to the final weekend probably. DO NOT like the chances of either West team running the East to make it back to Vancouver for the Grey Cup. Still feel, in spite of todays result, the Lions easiest road runs via Alberta.....
___________________
Certainly a thumbs up for a solid effort and results based record earned by SolE. Weird how a record stands for almost twenty years, Sherrit breaks it and it falls again just a couple seasons later. As noted by the broadcast crew, Sherritt seemed to have one of his most solid games in quite awhile, while watching someone break his record......

What a pathetic showing and I'm tired of wish full thinking. The Lion's will not win another game this season. Calgary will beat them next week and who ever they play in the playoffs, well that will be another loss and I hope some heads will roll! Prove me wrong if you will. They are not consistent enough on offence and take way too many penalties. Their defence cannot bail them out all the time as was more than evident tonight. What a hopeless feeling! :thdn:

There is a statistic that I would like to see: % of penalties attributed to N plays. I suspect it is very high. Until the CFL decides to provide professional entertainment that features the most capable 44 players, we will continue to see this kind of nonsense. The same reality needs to apply to coaches. This is entertainment, not nationalistic hubris.

Hit the road Bennie ... and don't come back no mo, no mo no mo ...

This was quite astoundingly uncompetitive football. And there is some fine talent wearing Orange.

Hit the road Bennie ...

Yes, it was a solid read, one of the reasons why a job like his must be challenging at times. You have to tell it like it is but these players you disparage in the dark times are often guys you need to speak to regardless. And they love rubbing it in when they have a good game and you've commented in the past about their play....

One stat I hadn't heard but wasn't too surprised to hear about from Ulrich's postgame report.... The BC Lions are 2-4 this season against teams with a winning record :dizzy: For those clamouring for coaching changes and/or massive player shake-ups, there is a good foundation stat with which to build your arguement.

Ulrich seems confident that the Lions are probably the team that is going to be facing the Esks in the Western Semi. I guess his logic makes sense, in the sense the Lions play the Stamps and Riders versus Esks. Riders have not looked GOOD since Darian went down. I haven't checked the CFL standings/crossover page just yet. Will the Lions still finish in third if both teams (Lions/Riders) lose their remaining game? Or both win their remaining game? Still stuff to be settled .....

Went digging through stats.cfldb.ca to find our last road loss by 34+. Most recent before tonight as far as I can tell... turns out we did it back-to-back to close the season... 17 years ago.

Lost 41-7 in Edm on Sun Oct 16, 1997. Then exactly a week later in Cgy we fell 43-9. Then exactly a week after that on Nov 2 we played the crossover game in Mtl, the infamous U2 game at Molson Stadium where Pringle set a new playoff rushing record of 264yds on 32 carries. Final score of 45-35 flattered us, as it was 42-12 at the half.
