Seems like a lot of changes in a short period of time.
And what happens when those changes do NOT bear fruit? More changes?
and even worse, IMO, what if these changes do bear fruit? Correlation does not equal causation. IMO, had Garcia JUST been the change, okay. I like Matthews and Turk has quite the NFL resume but, IMO, Garcia is the guy out of all of these that would help this team right now. When does Higgins start feeling some heat (if he's not already....).

Good move by the Als IMO. Should help Troy Smith
Not really sure who this Frank Doyle guy is but he doesn't seem too high on the Garcia move. Not so much from any shortcomings on JG's part but more that the Als are too far gone:
Jeff Garcia Can’t Save the Montreal Alouettes
Jeff Garcia Can’t Save the Montreal Alouettes
Jeff Garcia pulled off a lot of comebacks on the football field as a player, but he might be in over his head in trying to save the Montreal Alouettes’ season.
...
Montreal hasn’t scored a touchdown in consecutive games and this Garcia signing just reeks of desperation. Maybe Garcia can help a bit, but the Als need to face the fact that they don’t have any playmakers on this team. Smith looks utterly lost with three touchdowns and three interceptions in five games and nobody else has stepped up to help him out.
At this point, the Als might be better with Garcia wearing a helmet than carrying a clipboard.
Sports can be a peculiar thing. When partaking in fiction, like a book or movie, we adopt a "Willing Suspension of Disbelief" for enjoyment's sake. There's a similar force at work in sports: "Willing Suspension of Rationality". If you doubt this, listen to any conversation between rival team fans. You even see it among fans of the same team. Fans argue over who's the better QB or goalie, and selectively cite stats that support their views while ignoring those that don't.

What would help Troy Smith is cutting him so that he can get on with life in the real world and have more time to polish his "Gino Torretta" Heisman.TheLionKing wrote:Good move by the Als IMO. Should help Troy Smith

The way Smith's been playing it won't be long before he's gone.Lions4ever wrote:What would help Troy Smith is cutting him so that he can get on with life in the real world and have more time to polish his "Gino Torretta" Heisman.TheLionKing wrote:Good move by the Als IMO. Should help Troy Smith

I think that when a HC is struggling there are situations - like in business - where it makes sense to bring in a consultant (former HC or top OC or DC) or like the Lions did with Hufnagel in IIRC 2007. But this was during TC starting his role.
Turk Shonert was an idiotic move although Matthews might make sense BUT he is a guy who does it his way. Don Matthews is a 'live on the edge' coach who gets his players buy into his vision and they play fully engaged. BUT Don Matthews does this with talent and the Als QB is showing nothing like talent. TSN guys says Smith doesn't work hard - comes in and leaves.
Jeff Garcia can likely only help if he can still play as this QB sounds more and more like a prima donna.
Bo Levi Mitchell was sent with the Stampeders blessing to Jeff Garcia summer camp for a month but guys like him seem to be open to learning.
The ONLY thing I can think of that is saving the Als QB is that he must have pictures of a lot of people in that organization.
Too many extras around smacks of instability and yeah - desperation.
A Dave Ritchie as a consultant to a Tom Higgins would be more my choice as his style

Don Mathews is a former Als HC and as such would have good cred with the fans. His presence makes it look to fans that they are doing something effective to turn things around.
cant help but remember how AC was written off in Hamilton.JohnHenry wrote:The Als can bring in all the consultants they want, but until they realize T. Smith will never be a pro QB, the team will struggle.
