So, we're ranked two spots above a team that just beat us in our own backyard? Who the heck does these power rankings?

Yes, SP, hard to fathom some of those ratings. Generates some opinions and discussion, however.

Based on what we have seen so far, some comments. Solid quarterbacking for the winning teams. No surprise.

Top group: Calg and Sask

Calgary ... Both their O and D looked good vs the Als. Mitchell

Saskatchewan ... Not missing Korey Sheets at all. Got that excellent O Line. 10 sacks on Defence. Durant
.............

Next group: Edm and Winnipeg

Edmonton ... Chris Jones obviously knows how to run a defence. And he seems to know how to build a winning culture. In a hurry. They look like they are going to be very tough. Reilly

Winnipeg ... O'Shea gets his team off to a very good start. Willy
..............

Next group ... Ham, BC and Toronto

Hamilton ... Did Kent Austin overestimate Zach Collaros? Did he under appreciate Henry Burris? Dunno, but I expect Austin to field a pretty good team, as he always has.

B.C. ... Who knows? Bodog had us as favourites for the Cup. Yes we were pretty solid in the first half. Adjustments? More determination on the part of the Eskimos? Done in by trick plays? Out coached? Now about that left tackle position. And the running game. And tackling in the secondary.

Toronto ... They seem to miss Chris Jones big time on D. The O looked productive with Ricky Ray.
..............

Bottom group ... Mtl and Ott

Montreal ... Are they going to be as bad as one might think? Can Troy Smith get his passes more on target? Is there chaos in the organization? Dunno ... Next up: the Lions. Defensive packages to pressure over offensive left tackle?

Ottawa ... Better enjoy that first in the East standing, Ottawa. It might not last all that long.

Yes, its a bit weird that BC's preseason ranking would be #5 but would raise a spot after a home opening loss to a team ranked below them.

I always enjoy tracking the rankings but they are just a discussion point, mean absolutely nothing, thankfully......

IMO the CFL power ratings are garbage. IIRC last season at one point the Riders were able maintain top ranking in spite of loosing 2 or 3 games in a row.

I always thought that the idea behind the power rankings was to reflect how a team was doing in the present moment while disregarding wins or loses from previous weeks.

Given how the Riders finished the season, maybe the ratings were prophetic. I still don't pay much attention to them. There are more objective ways to dig beneath the won-loss records and evaluate teams' strengths and weaknesses.

Starting to get some data on the teams now ...

Top group ... Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary

Edmonton. Chris Jones comes as advertised. Intense. Tough. His team plays that way.

Winnipeg. Looking good. Scoring well.

Calgary. Hufnagel, Dickenson and Stubler. They have talent and coaching.

Next group ... Toronto, Saskachewan and Hamilton

Toronto. Scott Milanovich has them turned around after last week's loss to Winnipeg. He has had two assistants promoted to Head Coaching gigs, but seems to have the Argos back on track. Ricky Ray is lighting it up.

Saskatchewan. Loads of talent. A calm and cool Head Coach at the helm.

Hamilton. No wins, but it seems to me Kent Austin will have them competing all year. Tough loss to a pretty good Edmonton team.

Bottom group ... Montreal, Ottawa and the Lions.

Montreal. They beat us handily. Without much of an offence.

Ottawa. They were close against Winnipeg.

B.C. Five teams in the West. We are number five. Nine teams in the league. We are somewhere near the bottom. With Hamilton, we share the distinction of two losses. We will no doubt improve. Our talent seems competitive. O Line concerns as always. Airlift of international tackles to continue? New designs for pass protection? New designs for the running game? Next up, a visit to Regina, losers today to Toronto.

CFL.ca Power Rankings: Eskimos enter top half

Posted: July 08, 2014 09:00 AM

CFL.ca Staff

1 Calgary Stampeders
Week 1 Ranking: 1
No game, no change. After trouncing the Alouettes in Week 1, the Stampeders entered their first of two bye weeks of the season for an early rest. This week, Bo Levi Mitchell will lead the Stamps on their first road trip of the year to Toronto, where they'll face Ricky Ray and the Argonauts.

2 Saskatchewan Roughriders
Week 1 Ranking: 2
Even the elite are allowed a rough outing every now and then, right? The Riders head home to face the BC Lions on Saturday night at Mosaic, following what can only be described a forgettable loss to Toronto on the road. Expect Corey Chamblin to work his team to the bone this week, after admitting that the Riders didn't have the best sequence of practices heading into Week 2.

3 Toronto Argonauts
Week 1 Ranking: 5
The Boatmen shoot up two spots after a dominant, all-hands-on-deck win over the Roughriders on Saturday afternoon. Ricky Ray was nearly purrfect, throwing for over 400 yards for the fourth time as an Argo. If the Double Blue intend on staying in three-spot, they'll need to show up against the visiting Stampeders in Week 3, and prove that their Week 2 outing was not a one-time display.

4 Edmonton Eskimos
Week 1 Ranking: 6
The Green and Gold rise to the upper-echelon of the Power Rankings after registering a second-straight win to start the new season. The Esks will have the chance at starting their year with three-straight wins for the first time since 2011, when a certain someone was leading the way for them under centre. Meanwhile, Mike Reilly has been solid so far, and appears to be more comfortable in the pocket behind a refurbished offensive line. A date with the REDBLACKS await at Commonwealth Stadium.

5 Winnipeg Blue Bombers
Week 1 Ranking: 7
After those who choose the Power Rankings took plenty of heat from Bomber fans in Week 1, the Blue and Gold rise two spots to #5 after a comeback win over the expansion REDBLACKS. Winnipeg will vie for their third-straight win on Friday Night Football in Montreal against an Alouettes team that they've had some success against in recent seasons. Are the Bombers for real? Only time and more wins may tell.

6 Montreal Alouettes
Week 1 Ranking: 8
After looking out of sorts a week earlier in Montreal's season debut against Calgary, Troy Smith looked better in Week 2. Much like last week, it was the defence, and the play of tailback Brandon Whitaker that kept the Als above sea-level. Smith has yet to throw a touchdown pass in two games this season, and he'll look to change that against a rising Bombers team.

7 Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Week 1 Ranking: 3
Hamilton enters their first bye week of the season after dropping a last-second decision to the Eskimos on Friday Night Football. Expect Kent Austin to be hard at work.

8 BC Lions
Week 1 Ranking: 4
It looks like Kevin Glenn needs some more time to figure out BC's offence. Glenn has thrown six interceptions in two games, which is one less than he threw all last year. It won't get much easier for the Lions this week, as they'll face the Roughriders at what's expected to be a wild Mosaic Stadium.

9 Ottawa REDBLACKS
Week 1 Ranking: 9
In their franchise debut, Ottawa stunned the CFL world by taking the Bombers to the limit. If that's the type of football we can expect from the REDBLACKS in 2014, then things might get interesting in the East.
Yeayyy ... We're number 8.

Riders D gives up 48 points and they stay at # 2 ? :dizzy:

Ottawa came closer to a win than the Lions have in either of their 2 games, therefore Lions should be #9.

After Week 3 ...

Top group.

Edmonton. O'Leary the journalist speculated about a 4-0 start for the Eskies. They have a shot. Chris Jones is the real deal. And I don't think anybody is surprised that his team is fully prepared to play, each game.

Winnipeg. O'Shea surprises me, but just because he seems to be so good, so fast. Excellent focus during the games. Not jumping up and down, when his team takes the lead once again late in the game, for keeps.

Calgary. When all is said and done, they are probably still the best team in the league. Edmonton and Winnipeg do not have their depth of talent. Nor do they have the offensive brain power of Hufnagel and Dickenson. Open the box, and Presto, Bo Levi Mitchell, elite quarterback.

Next group.

Toronto. Losing Jones and O'Shea has to hurt. But they have Milanovich. And Ricky Ray. They will be fine, methinks.

Montreal. Aggressive defence. Extending Jim Popp brings that stability they have lacked with Calvillo retiring, and with the Dan Hawkins fiasco. Troy Smith is looking more and more like the real deal. Great attitude.

Next group.

Regina. Poor start to the season. Great O Line. Durant is up and down. Terrible against us this time around. Grey Cup hangover?

B.C. Benny is going to have to dial down the shouting on the sideline. But with good talent, and good OC and DC work, we should be competitive.

Bottom group.

Hamilton. I will be surprised if Kent Austin does not get the TiCats back into contention in the East. Was he too fast in dumping Burris? Did he believe too much in his own ability to develop his own quarterback?

Ottawa. They will get some wins. But there are no easy ones out there. They look competitive.

Not sure that I would include Montreal in that second grouping, they couldn't close out a game that they had in hand. Otherwise things look in order, although BC gets the bump up over the Riders, as they have played two games at home and lost to the Lions in one of them.

After Week 4 ...

Top group.

Calgary. Stubler has the Stamps playing very tough D. Mitchell keeps on winning. Great coaching. The class of the league.

Edmonton. Chris Jones is for real. His team is for real. But they have not been explosive on offence. Reilly is still risking his body. Their defence is terrific.

Winnipeg. Got handled by the Esks. But they should bounce back a bit, methinks.

Next group.

B.C. Yea. Our talent is showing somewhat. Glenn is learning to live with pass rush pressure. LOL We gave up some sacks, but did look much better. The pass blocking was better. Running the ball well really helped. See what we can do when we give Harris and Logan even tiny gaps. Big gaps = Great night running the ball. D has been pretty solid, it seems to me. Better tackling throughout than most years. Mark W might be getting through to the secondary: Yes, your job includes proper tackling.

Saskatchewan. Is Corey Chamblin losing it a bit? They look a bit shaky. He seemed to flip flop on his running backs and made some radical decisions.

Next Group.

Ottawa. Good for Rick Campbell. Gluey Hughie was in attendance.

Toronto. Losing Jones and O'Shea has to hurt. Injuries also hurt. But I expect Milanovich's team to be pretty good.

Bottom group.

Montreal. Looking pretty bad. No offence. High risk defence has some vulnerability. QB a question mark. HC a question mark. OC a question mark. Ochocinco a question mark.

Hamilton. Played tough on the road vs the Stampeders. But they have yet to win a game.

I like your version of the ratings WCJ. I'd rate the Al's #9 but I realize they have a win while Hamilton DOES NOT.
